Position Summary:

The Classroom Teacher works under the direction and supervision of the building principal and assistant principal where appropriate, provides appropriate instruction for all assigned students in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations.

General:

Acts in accordance with Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers.

Supervision/Evaluation:

Works under the direction and supervision of the Building Principal.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Instruction: (Illustrative, not inclusive)

· Demonstrates knowledge of subject and educational pedagogy (reading, writing, mathematics) and presents appropriate lesson content, following curriculum expectations as specified by the Board of Education;

· Develops lessons designed to promote achievement of lesson objectives;

· Engages students in active learning, monitoring, understanding and adjusting lessons when necessary;

· Uses both direct and supervised instruction to keep students motivated and on task;

· Uses appropriate questioning strategies;

· Communicates clearly, with precise language and acceptable oral expression;

· Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence;

· Uses a variety of resources, materials and methods to improve the effectiveness of lessons;

· Creates learning environments and experiences that integrate technology into curriculum and instruction;

· Implements a variety of grouping strategies as dictated by student needs and learning objectives;

· Gives clear and reasonable assignments; according to guidelines referred to in Student Handout.

· Assesses student achievement regularly and provides regular feedback to students;

· Involves parents in active participation in the educational process; keeps parents informed regarding classroom goals and student progress; responds promptly and appropriately to parent concerns;

· Monitors special education students placed in regular education and provides support and assistance to the mainstream program;

· Continuously monitors student and group needs and utilizes alternative methods and strategies of instruction to meet these needs;

· Establishes and maintains an environment conductive to learning.

Organization:

· Ability to organize and coordinate work, organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints;

· Uses diagnostic and other test information to analyze students’ affective and cognitive levels in order to address individual and group needs on a daily and long-term basis;

· Demonstrates an understanding of child development in planning and learning activities;

· Plans instruction consistent with student skills, knowledge and motivation and builds on these areas to increase achievement levels at all relevant grade levels;

· Requests assistance from pupil services and other supports where appropriate to address student and classroom needs;

· Guides and supervises paraprofessionals and other staff as assigned to their program or individual students;

· Orders and inventories supplies, materials, and equipment necessary to conduct an appropriate education program;

· Maintains written lesson plans in advance of presentation and modifies as necessary.

Classroom Environment:

· Maintains a positive learning environment appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students;

· Treats students with courtesy and respect;

· Establishes and maintains appropriate, consistent and reasonable standards of behavior;

· Encourages positive self-image and self-discipline through cooperation, consideration and respect for others;

· Promotes good study habits;

· Performs all classroom environment responsibilities identified in school handbook.

Professional:

· Participates in curriculum planning and/or writing;

· Implements Board of Education and school policies and rules governing student life and conduct;

· Promotes and upholds goals and objectives of the Board of Education and school;

· Upholds the ethics of the teaching profession (CT Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers);

· Implements school and school district action plans in the classroom;

· Performs school related duties such as homeroom supervision, record keeping, and other duties such as lunch and recess;

· Demonstrates an understanding of research and potential applications of educational technology in learning;

· Keeps abreast of and implements innovative methods and materials to address students’ needs;

· Participates in activities for self-growth, evaluations and ongoing professional advancement;

· Understands, models and teaches legal and ethical practices regarding information and educational technology;

· Provides for appropriate student and parent advocacy (i.e. mandated reporter);

· Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to teaching performance and professional growth;

· Communicates effectively with students, parents and other members of the school community in order to create constructive relationships.

· Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;

· Cooperates and maintains working relationships with colleagues, administrators, and other staff members contacted in the course of work;

· Demonstrates an on-going interest in educational concerns and professional growth;

· Maintains confidentiality regarding personal student and family information;

· Promotes the educational program in the community (teacher web pages, Open Houses, school newsletters);

· Maintains high standards for personal attendance and punctuality so that student achievement is not adversely impacted;

· Maintains appropriate materials and detailed lesson plans for substitutes;

· Performs other tasks and responsibilities as delegated by the school principal/or assistant principal/or designee (as in mitigating or emergency circumstances).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of subjects taught; thorough knowledge of principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school rules; regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents.

Qualifications:

Certification/License: Appropriate Connecticut State Certification for subject and grade level.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.

Master’s Degree as per state requirements.

Experience: Student teaching, practicum and/or state approved preparation.

Experience working with children preferred.

Terms of Employment and Work Schedule

Standard teacher work schedules, including attendance at staff meetings and other meetings/functions as appropriate (i.e. Open House, Parent Conferences).

Physical Requirements:

Must have the physical ability to execute the full performance of duties for the position, including but not limited to: reaching, some lifting, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
