General:
The Head Custodian supervises the day to day operations of the custodial staff. This position is responsible for the timely and efficient operation of the school district buildings and grounds including custodial operations, green cleaning methods, indoor air quality practices, and safety and security protocols. The head custodian must have the aptitude to independently operate various electrical, plumbing, heating and lighting systems within the building and maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff personnel.
Supervision:
The custodian works under the general supervision of the facilities supervisor.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Cleaning
a. Sweeps classrooms and vacuums carpets daily.
b. Cleans gymnasium daily.
c. Scrubs and disinfects lavatory floors and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
d. Replenishes paper products as needed.
e. Washes all windows, dusts furniture, and cleans all student desks as needed.
f. Strips, washes and waxes floors as directed.
g. Stores and disposes waste and recycling in the proper receptacles.
h. Maintains supply inventory list and orders supplies as needed.
i. Understands and implements green cleaning protocols as defined in board of education policy and as directed by the facilities supervisor.
- Maintenance*
a. Operates equipment in a responsible and safe manner.
b. Replaces lights, clock batteries, etc. when necessary.
c. Reports all problems or damage to facilities supervisor.
d. Paints designated areas as instructed.
e. Makes minor building repairs as directed.
f. Reviews maintenance request form, performs requested tasks, and reports regularly to the facilities supervisor on the status of requests.
g. Assists with setup of facilities for functions, events, meetings etc.
- Safety and Security Protocols*
a. Assumes responsibility for opening the building each day including inspecting the building for any concerning overnight activities.
b. Answers emergency calls and works overtime when necessary to ensure building security.
c. Reports problems with emergency lighting, air control units, heating, cooling, fire and security alarms, and any other systems to the facilities supervisor.
- Grounds Maintenance*
a. Removes snow and sands walks as directed.
b. Maintains grounds as directed by facilities supervisor.
- Deliveries*
a. Performs mail runs as assigned.
b. Assists with deliveries and receiving.
- Supervision*
a. Supervises the work of the evening custodial team by assigning work & special projects as needed and evaluating the completion of daily tasks during morning building walkthroughs.
b. Works positively and cooperatively with team members and other school staff.
- Carry out such other duties as directed by the facilities supervisor.*
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Solid understanding of technical aspects of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems
- Working knowledge of facilities machines and equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Physical Requirements:
Must have the physical ability to execute the full performance of duties for the position, including but not limited to: reaching, regularly lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
Other Requirements:
As a condition of employment, drivers of school vehicles – or employees who drive personal vehicles on school business – are expected to obey all traffic laws and regulations and maintain a valid license in good standing. Accordingly, all citations and/or tickets including, but not limited to, those related to a driver’s license, failure to wear a seatbelt, speeding, distracted driving, or DUI violations are the sole responsibility of the employee to either pay or successfully contest; the school assumes no obligation for any fines or fees. The employee’s employer is responsible for “fix-it”-related citations and/or tickets on school’s vehicles only.
