As a member of our buying team, you are responsible for procuring operational direct-charge items and ensuring that those procurements meet business needs s to keep our production going and our profitability up. These items will be sourced to supply a mine on a remote island about 18 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. You will work at our Vintage Park office in Juneau and will have scheduled days on site at the Warehouse location. You will be in charge of developing sources of supply, maintaining purchasing records, and following price trends. You will be called upon to take appropriate action to assist in ordering inventory based on an inventory plan, storage capability, and forecasted consumption at the mine site. You must know how to work independently and as a part of a team, as well as identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 450 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here’s what you can expect in this role:

  • Training first. We provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well. We also provide MSHA training to new hires prior to them heading out to the mine site.
  • You have excellent attention to detail, and you will utilize these skills while reviewing price discrepancies and assist accounts payable with timely settlements of outstanding issues.
  • You have experience with purchasing, and business administration.
  • You will review supplier performance issues, and work on positive solutions for improvement among vendors.
  • You will refine the purchase reference library, including parts manual to cross-reference material and general supply catalogs necessary to support procurement.
  • Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before work starts. You will promote and personally observe safety procedures.

POSITION SUMMARY

The successful candidate will work well in both a team environment and independently to procure goods needed for site operations. Organization, communication, and multi-tasking are important to successful completion of these duties.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Procure operational direct-charge items in association with Materials Procurement policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for compliance with all applicable Federal, State and Local laws.

  • Review and action system-generated Requisitions direct charge.

  • Evaluate items on requisitions; ensures procurements meet the needs of business while maintaining pricing integrity.

  • Develops sources of supply, maintain purchasing records, follow price trends, and perform availability lead-time checks.

  • Assist in the development and monitoring of purchasing agreements, authorize and release orders per agreements.

  • Take appropriate action to assist in ordering of inventory items based on inventory plan, storage capability, and forecast consumption.

  • Develop appropriate purchasing reference library including parts manual, cross-reference material and general supply catalogs necessary to support procurement.

  • Expedite outstanding orders; ensures communication of order status to end users as appropriate.

  • Perform supply close procedures. Review invoices for price discrepancies, freight terms and assist accounts payable with timely settlements of outstanding issues.

  • Review and action accounting reports (quantity and price mismatch reports, liability reports, others as needed).

  • Reviews invoices per contracts to ensure accuracy.

  • Reviews supplier performance issues, works on positive solutions for improvements.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Receiving training and instruction as required
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Business Administration, Purchasing, or Related Degree from a four-year college preferred; equivalent experience may be acceptable to meet degree requirements.

Other Qualifications
Two years' experience in purchasing or related position, preferably within the mining industry.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must be able to talk and hear.

Vision:
  • Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus
Speaking:
  • Able to clearly communicate with co-workers and supervisors on the radio and in person
Hearing:
  • Must wear hearing protection while working in the mill or in the mine (paste plant)

Work Environment & Job Schedule

Employees may be exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in the mill and other work environments can be very loud. Work schedule is 4 days on, 3 days off. This position may occasionally require work on nights or weekends.
