What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Technician position at HECLA MINING CO.?
As our Environmental Technician, you will be responsible for environmental monitoring and maintaining systems to prevent and minimize environmental impacts at a remote mine to ensure the site meets its environmental permit responsibilities. Every day you will work at a mine on an island about 18 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. You’ll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to ensure timely completion of projects, programs, and objectives. The majority of your average workday consists of working with other environmental personnel to provide site-wide oversight through compliance and operational monitoring to report and evaluate impacts of mine development. To thrive in this role, you will have an educational background in environmental sciences, and the ability to learn and understand environmental regulations related to mining. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, be self-motivated, and identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 515 people. Here’s what you can expect in this role:
- You will perform environmental compliance sampling, operational monitoring, operations support, and data compilation.
- You will conduct field data collection, laboratory coordination, shipping, data review, resultant data compilation, and some analysis.
- You assist with meteorological and air quality monitoring systems including equipment operation and maintenance, data acquisition and reporting.
- You will assist in hazardous material tracking, hazardous waste management, recycling programs, and provide leadership for spill response.
- Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before work starts. You will promote and personally observe safety procedures.
- You must be comfortable working outdoors during all weather conditions.
