What are the responsibilities and job description for the Underground Construction Miner position at HECLA MINING CO.?
As our construction miner, you will be building and repairing underground mine infrastructure such as bulkheads, ventilation air doors, vent raises/escapeways. You will install ground support, paste pipe, utilities and perform other general construction activities. Every day you will work at a mine on a remote island about 18 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. You’ll start every job with safety first by inspecting your workplace, your equipment. To thrive in this role, you must be able to must be able to trouble shoot and maintain mechanical and hydraulic systems as well as be proficient in welding and fabricating. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently.

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing over 500 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here’s what you can expect in this role:
- Training first. Every hire is provided MSHA training in the first 4 days on the job. We also provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well.
- Apply your mechanical aptitude in operating and maintaining lift trucks, jacklegs, hanging fans, and other equipment and tasks.
- Working on a remote island and living in a mining camp environment away from home if you are not Juneau based. Our construction department schedule is 14 days on/14 days off.
- You’ll be below ground doing workplace inspections assigned each morning. Then, we’ll rely on you to prioritize your work before you get started.
- Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before we start the day for your safety and the safety of your team.
