Position Overview :

The Wheelchair Technician works closely with our Therapy Department to support the fitting, construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of seating systems and wheelchair frames. This role involves collaboration with licensed therapists to ensure each resident’s mobility and comfort needs are met with precision and care.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Assist therapists in conducting seating assessments, offering technical expertise on wheelchair frames and seating products.
  • Participate in seating clinics alongside therapists and physicians to assess individual needs.
  • Collaborate with wheelchair manufacturers and vendors to customize equipment features based on resident requirements.
  • Construct and modify planar and custom-molded seating systems as per therapist assessments and physician orders.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on seating systems, wheelchair frames, and other mobility aids (e.g., standers, bicycles, walkers, gait-trainers).
  • Ensure safety and proper functioning of all equipment.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to lift / carry up to 50 pounds and assist with the mobility of individuals weighing up to 200 pounds in wheelchairs.
  • Comfortable with physically demanding tasks, including bending, stooping, kneeling, and using hands for fine motor tasks.
  • Must remain alert and awake throughout the entire shift.
  • Preferred : Rehabilitation Technology Specialist (RTS) certification.
  • 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience or training.
  • Ability to perform basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Required Knowledge & Skills :

  • Understanding of gross musculoskeletal anatomy and neurodevelopment.
  • Familiarity with neuromuscular abnormalities and their impact on mobility.
  • Knowledge of biomechanical principles and their application to mobility devices.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.
  • Experience with tools and equipment such as industrial sewing machines, seating simulators, vacuformers, table saws, and drills.
