What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at Helena Indian Alliance?
The Medical Assistant is part of a medical team in an ambulatory clinic setting that includes an integrated behavioral health model. The MA shall perform basic clinic interventions and treatments under the direction of medical providers, as well as administer medications and vaccinations. The MA shall perform laboratory testing by obtaining blood and urine samples and operating basic laboratory equipment. The MA is responsible for completing documentation to meet all clinical quality measures. The MA will assist in the managing the care of patients by performing chart prep review, follow ups, referrals, medical refills, and other duties to provide a high quality of care to all patients. The MA shall have direct oversight per Montana Board of Medical Examiners and operate within their scope of practice.
DUTIES, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinates with the clinic medical team and Medical Director to provide clinical care
- Performs interventions and treatments as ordered and within skill level and competency
- Prescription refills via electronic health record
- Contacts patients with test results when indicated by providers
- Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient, institutional and staff information.
- Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice and operates within their scope of practice.
- Participates in departmental meetings and projects.
· Perform chart review and preparation
· Participate in the completion and improvement of clinical quality measures
· Creates completed and concise notes and documentation
· Respond to in-house medical emergencies when needed
· Performs autoclave processes on re-usable medical equipment
· Adheres to all infection prevention and control policy, protocols and procedures
· Performs clinical quality assurance processes in a timely manner and as directed
· Adheres to all clinical and facility-wide policies and procedures
· Maintains a clean and functional work space and patient room
· Uses and maintains medical equipment in clean working order
· Follows all manufacturer’s use for instructions when operating equipment and using chemicals
· Promote and support HIA through other activities in fundraising, professional representation, public appearances
· Attend monthly staff meetings and education and training opportunities
· Additional duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Medical Director
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILIITES, AND USE OF EQUIPMENT
· Knowledge of general clinical practices for all ages.
· Ability to establish working relationships with staff, patients/families and public.
· Phlebotomy and CLIA waived testing
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Ability to adapt to and learn electronic medical record system, software programs, and clinical applications
· Skillful in performing phlebotomy, injections, and operating CLIA-waived equipment
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED OR DESIRED)
· Completion of an accredited program in Medical Assistance
· Desired to have completed the Certification Exam and possess an unencumbered Medical Assistant license
· Desired to have 1 year experience in a medical office or setting
· Desired to have skill endorsements for Phlebotomy and EKG
· Current certification in BLS. May complete within 3 months of employment
· Valid Montana Driver’s License with a driving record that will allow coverage on the center’s insurance policy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed in a medical and behavioral health office and clinic setting; sitting, with intermittent standing and walks; reaches for and uses writing instruments and keyboard; reads reports and other written materials; extensive use of telephone and oral communication with the public and coworkers; stoops, bends, kneels, reaches for, picks up, and pushes or pulls; ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
All employees of Helena Indian Alliance may have contact with patients, families, visitors that may be physically debilitated, have mental or psychological conditions, or may be under the influence of a substance. Employees work areas include the entire facility and its property. Employees will have interaction with the entire staff throughout the facility.
HAZARDS ASSOCIATED TO THE JOB
All employees of Helena Indian Alliance have a risk of exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and toxic substances and chemicals. All employees have a risk of physical injury due to lifting, transferring or moving objects or assisting patients. Employees with driving privileges are at risk of a motor vehicle accident.
