Summary

As part of the Substance Abuse Block Grant (SABG), the Parenting Peer Specialist works in the community (particularly with pregnant and parenting members with substance use disorder (SUD)), to increase access to treatment and prevention activities in order to reduce the prevalence of OUDs and substance-related overdose deaths. Working collaboratively with other community stakeholders, the Parenting Peer Specialist provides peer outreach to identified Navajo and Yavapai County residents to improve access to, participation in and retention in evidence based practices. Guidance and direction is provided by the Northern Regional Coordinator.

Essential Duties

  • Identify and engage community members including uninsured or underinsured individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) in treatment and community based services. The target population includes vulnerable members such as pregnant women, parents with SUD, and homeless individuals..
  • Engage and assist individuals re-entering the community from the criminal justice and crisis systems, including hospitals, to participate in treatment for substance use disorder. Engage pregnant members (pre and post-partum) in treatment and peer support services, and provide wrap around services to successfully transition back to the community with support for holistic wellness activities.
  • Provide outreach in the community to educate and assist community members and stakeholders with navigating the full continuum of care related to opioid misuse, abuse and dependency.
  • Assist members in fulfilling court obligations including community service, treatment, Department of Child Safety (DCS) requirements such as parenting classes, and more.
  • Assist individuals in enrolling for services and engaging in services including applying for Medicaid coverage as needed.
  • Collaborate with other grant recipients and community stakeholders to coordinate outreach efforts and support
  • May transport potential members to and from various appointments (within an agency vehicle), as appropriate.
  • Relates own recovery process in a positive and supportive manner through coaching, role modeling and mentoring in order to assist members in developing skills to achieve their goals.
  • Works with member to navigate and use community resources in an effective manner.
  • Provides information on service options at RBHA direct contracted agencies and fulfills referral requirements when indicated.
  • Advocates for members, as needed, to ensure delivery of necessary services.
  • Promotes HOPE, Inc. as the premier peer support organization to the behavioral health community and prospective funding sources.
  • Ensure compliance with and support of Executive directives, Agency contracts and established policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties in accordance with agency needs and changes within the scope of the SABG grant.

Requirements

  • At least 21 years of age
  • High School / GED 2 years' behavioral health experience or
  • Graduation from Peer Support training, required within one year of employment
  • Must have first- hand knowledge of a behavioral health condition or substance abuse issue, having received treatment or medication personally OR identify as a family member of someone in recovery
  • Strongly preferred- Individuals with lived experience in recovery from substance use who have also parented young children.
  • Valid Arizona Driver's license, Driver's license is an essential requirement for performing duties for this position with a Clean Motor Vehicle Record - no more than 2 moving violations or a license suspension in past 3 years
  • Current 1st Aid and CPR certification
  • Level One Fingerprint Clearance card
