POSITION: DIRECTOR OF NURSING

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Interim Director of Nursing is responsible for the entire operation of nursing services.
Including but not limited to;
· The development and maintenance of nursing service objectives and standard of nursing practice. Ensuring that the facility’s residents’ care policies and procedures and the policies and procedures developed by the pharmaceutical services committee and the infection control committee which relate to nursing services are implemented.
· Coordination of all personnel within the nursing department.
· Coordination of the nursing department with other departments.
· Regular inspections of the facility for compliance with Federal, State, and Local standards and regulations.
DUTIES:
· Development and maintenance of nursing objectives and standards for the facility.
· Establishment of policies, procedures, and job descriptions for nursing service personnel: interpretation of these to personnel and directing the administration of each nursing unit, based on the above-mentioned objectives, standard, policies and procedures. Assure patients of a comfortable, clean, orderly and safe environment. Evaluates nursing service needs and coordinates nursing service with other departments.
· Interview applicants sent by administration and approve or rejects job applicant, coordinates the orientation and instruction of new personnel for nursing services. Conducts or supervises in service education and training programs. Interprets principles of good management to nursing service supervisory personnel. Is responsible for scheduling nursing employees for 24-hour coverage to comply with state code. (ID. Work assignments for all nursing service personnel will be written, dated and posted; based on licensure, qualification and competency of nursing service personnel; in keeping with the specific nursing care needs of residents and made with consideration of the size and physical layout of the nursing facility). Coordinates the supervision and evaluation of the work performance of personnel in all nursing units. (Assisted in turn by supervisory unit personnel). Discharges personnel in accordance with company policy.
· Develops and maintain a plan for obtaining relief nursing service personnel as well as policies and direction for utilization of said personnel.
· Assures that nursing service personnel are not required to perform any duties of functions outside of their assigned resident care duties.
· Advises the administrator as to: the number and qualifications of nursing service personnel required to meet the residents’ needs.
· Directs the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care services for all residents on a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) day a week basis.
· Coordinates and assists charge nurses and the residents care coordinator in developing nursing care plans for individual residents, including rehabilitative and restorative activities. Instruction in self-help and cooperation with therapeutic services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and others.
· A member of professional committees as assigned, such as: the professional policy committee, pharmaceutical services committee and the infection control committee.
· Monitors the performance of the nurses in the monitoring of the nurse call system, making absolutely sure that every light is answered promptly and that the call signal is not turned off except by the aid or nurse answering the call.
· Assists in establishing administration procedures and control of medication under the direction of the pharmaceutical services committee.
· Assists in providing for the spiritual, psychological and special needs of residents.
· Serves as a consultant on admitting and discharge policies and procedures. Coordinates the assignment of residents to rooms.
· Coordinates the execution of resident care policies in the absence of the medical director.
· Assess supply and equipment needs for the nursing department and sees that units are adequately stocked and maintained.
· Is on call for emergencies that supervisory personnel cannot handle.
· Assist in the employee health program. Assists in the establishment of a disaster fire and safety program in cooperation with administration. Assures the proper handling and emergency care of residents, personnel and visitors involved in accidents while on the job or in the building.
· Assures that staff education is provided to nursing service personnel in accordance with the staff education plan.
· Supervises the maintenance of a reference library of written nursing materials and laws governing nursing care
· Advises and consults with the medical directors and the administrator on matters of nursing administration and resident care. Prepares and submits required reports and maintains statistics as directed. Attend department head meetings. Assist with budget preparation if requested to do so.
· Promotes public relations and maintenance of lines of communication with other Director of Nurses.
· Keeps current in the field of nursing through attendance at meetings, conferences, conventions and workshops; reading current literature pertaining to all aspects of patient care and restoration rehabilitation; and maintains membership in professional organizations if possible.
· An integral member of the health care team, the Director of Nurses, will be asked to function to his/her maximum potential. Working with other co-workers, must be professional, cooperative, and respectful in all matters. Professional ethics must always be the priority.
· These and other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Development and maintenance of nursing objectives and standards; establishment of policies/procedures; updating written job descriptions.
· Execution of patient care policies in the absence of the Medical Director.
· Compliance with Federal and State Code for Nursing service.
· Development of total resident care plans for individual residents.
· Care and use of supplies and equipment and maintenance of adequate stock levels; appearance of nursing areas; and regular inspection of nursing units for sanitation, order, safety and proper working condition of equipment.
· Reports to administration and attendance at department head meetings.
· Subject to frequent interruptions, called upon frequently to problems concerning residents and facility.
PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS:
o Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Current registration in this state.
o Training or experience in supervisory capacity in a hospital or extended care facility, including
o Geriatric and/or psychiatric nursing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

- Interacting with the general public, often in adverse conditions; many residents and their families are under emotional stress dealing with issues of illness, hospice, death, and grief.

- Constant necessity to respond maturely and effectively with residents, families, staff and other professionals.
- Appropriately represent facility in dress and demeanor.
