Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the daily supervision of the nursing staff in conjunction with CNO.
  • Identifies patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements.
  • Ensures service levels are achieved and maintained. Makes adjustments where necessary to meet service level requirements.
  • Effectively oversees care delivery.
  • Demonstrates team leadership skills by effectively coaching and mentoring other nursing staff and demonstrating superior patient care.
  • Performs patient rounding for all patient assignments.
  • Ensures submission of prior authorizations when indicated.
  • Reviews medical records of patient referrals and coordinates acceptance/denial in coordination with providers.
  • Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies to align with evidence based practice.
  • Develops and documents department procedures to ensure consistent and accurate information.
  • Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting hospital and nursing division's philosophies and standards of care; enforcing adherence to state board of nursing and state nurse practice act requirements and to other governing agency regulations; making or recommending adjustments.
  • Oversees day-today operations, which includes problem solving issues and ensuring effective processing.
  • Organizes and assists with quality assurance functions
  • Oversees nursing staff education and maintenance of competencies for nursing staff in conjunction with the Education Coordinator
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
  • Develops, supports, and actively seeks activities and establishes an environment that promotes recognition and retention for employees.
  • Communicates effectively and provides feedback to staff which may include department meetings, individual employee meetings, rounding, etc...
  • Interprets and applies department and organizational policies with consistency and fairness in managing a qualified, efficient, and productive workforce.
  • Addresses employee issues in an effective and timely manner.
  • Enforces and interprets policies and procedures with employee, as necessary.
  • Oversees approval of nursing staff timecards and administers annual performance appraisal process for assigned staff.
  • Assists with scheduling processes for staffing and shift coverage.
  • May assist in patient care when feasible. Utilizes the nursing process, for the performance of patient care, to assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient care to achieve prioritized patient outcomes.
  • Performs complete admission assessment, including full body system analysis and home med reconciliation process for med-surgical, obstetrical, newborn, pediatric, ER and outpatients.
  • Performs patient rounding for all patient assignments.
  • Performs patient/family teaching for assessed knowledge deficits.
  • Evaluates patient progress toward desired outcomes prior to discharge.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability in the delivery of patient care in a competent, professional and compassionate manner.
  • Develop and evaluate patient teaching materials.
  • Promote current, evidence-based nursing practices.
  • Documents accurate and ongoing assessments of patient status that reflect nursing interventions, patient responses, patient teaching and status of outcomes at discharge.
  • Completes shift end check with another nurse prior to leaving duty when performing patient care.
  • Encourage continued personal and professional growth of nursing personnel and provide opportunities for education and continued competency/learning through period CEU Programs, staff meetings, and skills days.
  • Provides patient care supervision.
  • Effectively oversees care delivery and staffing needs and assignments on the nursing units.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of treatments, policies/procedures, and equipment related to med/surg, obstetrical/newborn care, emergency room and OP care and monitored beds.
  • Demonstrates team leadership skills by effectively organizing and assigning shift work load to accommodate patient needs and provide safe patient care in conjunction with the nursing supervisors.
  • Recruits and develops a qualified and productive workforce.
  • Maintains and creates department job descriptions to represent positions accurately and clearly.
  • Recruits and interviews and selects qualified candidates following established hiring practices and guidelines.
  • Orients new employees in a thorough manner to department and organizational operations, policies and procedures
  • Provides training to department staff in an appropriate and thorough manner.
  • Offers opportunity for continuing education by sharing own knowledge, accessing internal opportunities, and considering external opportunities to support the continued development of department staff.
  • Monitors and verifies the compliance of staff in regards to maintaining required licenses and certifications, as applicable.
  • Uses labor resources, such as overtime, agency assistance, effectively.
  • Performs employee relations functions effectively to promote a positive work environment, influence retention and enhance communication.

  • Maintains, develops, monitors and reports budgets, expenses, variances and strategic planning for department
  • Oversees timekeeping records and updates appropriately and accurately for department staff.
  • Participates in annual budgeting planning process.
  • Participates in and promotes HHC committees, quality assurance, performance and quality improvement initiatives, and activities which support the facility and department operations.
  • Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of HHC operations and requirements of the HHC Compliance Program.
  • Promotes and ensures patient safety in performance of all responsibilities.
  • Administers medications, treatments and procedures in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders and nursing policy.
  • Demonstrates proficient technical/clinical skills and operational knowledge of equipment on unit.
  • Informs and involves CNO regarding patient care issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques and appropriate equipment to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
  • Presents self in a professional manner and enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Seeks opportunities for continued growth and performance improvement.
  • Always maintains a professional appearance and manner.
  • Dependable and completes work in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and emphasis on quantity, quality and knowledge of duties and tasks.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Current Nebraska licensed R.N. Bachelor’s degree (BSN) from a four-year college is desirable. Supervisory experience in nursing administration desired.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

Current Nebraska License as a Registered Nurse, LPN or Surgical Technician required. ACLS and NALS certification required. Initial certification and renewals must be obtained within a reasonable timeframe as determined by the manager/supervisor.
