What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at Henderson Companies?
Henderson Engineers is seeking an Estimator to join their organization in Kansas City. The Estimator will oversee the estimating, bidding, planning and conceptual design of projects. During traditional Design-Bid-Build work they will manage the full bid process for Henderson Building Solutions, including defining scopes of work, managing bid events, producing estimates and proposals. For design build work they will work with the engineering team to assess facilities and develop reports regarding existing conditions, recommendations for projects and project budgets. They will assist the engineering team in designing solutions to fit client and facility needs by ensuring all scopes and trades are captured during the assessment, proposal and design phase. During the design phase they will lead the team to include internal and external client interactions. Upon project award they collaborate with the Construction Operations group to select Trade Partners, finalize contracts, develop a project schedule and provide a seamless transition to the construction team. They may mentor or train less experienced employees. They stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new equipment, methods and procedures that are developing in the industry. Estimator must be mindful and respectful of internal and external clients. Will be required from time to time to participate in presenting proposals to clients and be a part of leading the sales process.
Minimum Qualifications for the Role are:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of construction or engineering preferred. Common examples include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Science, Construction Engineering, and Construction Management.
(Years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of requisite education).
Three (3) or greater years of experience in commissioning, construction management or estimating, or the design of building systems
Able to work independently but may require occasional supervision and mentoring.
Proficient Microsoft Office skills specifically within Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications & Plusses:
Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred.
Professional Engineering License a plus.
Skills and Duties you will be Responsible for while in this role:
Facility Assessment/Project Development:
Provides leadership for estimating and proposals.
Provides leadership for assessment teams.
Assist with on-site investigations to define facility issues and provide solutions.
Resolves issues that impact timing or budget up to and including the project bid date.
Documents observations, issues, and potential solutions.
Construction Management:
Leads the conceptual design phase of Design Build projects.
Leads Trade Partner Scope of Work Development, selection and contract execution.
Assists construction managers in the planning of a project.
Informs project team of complexity, critical path items and other considerations in establishing the budget and schedule for projects.
Analyzes problems and develops resolutions.
Develops appropriate documentation to coordinate the construction process.
Technical Assistance & Mentoring:
Provides technical assistance and support to all members of the HBS staff.
Mentors and trains junior members of the preconstruction team.
Equipment Purchase/Engineering Design Assistance:
Coordinates performance criteria, long lead items and complexities of logistics with engineers.
Recommends equipment to owners/clients.
Receives and reviews client needs for advanced ordering and purchasing.
Provides consistency in quality control with the engineering design team on HBS projects.
Provides oversight and reviews construction documents, including drawings and specifications for new buildings and renovations to existing facilities.
This responsibility pertains to the alignment with the preconstruction assessment/scope, budget, and schedule.
Provides support during the project kickoff.
Submits preliminary equipment selections and designs to project staff.
Reviews assessments and assists project staff as needed.
