12 month, 8 hr position (40 hours per week)
Parts Assistant: 5 hours/day (25 hours/week) Salary: $1,911.65/month
Bus Driver: 3 hours/day (15 hours/week) Salary: $16.47/hour
Parts Assistant Position Summary
Under general supervision, performs bookkeeping and accounting work in the procurement of parts for the School System Transportation Department. Work involves using the BSIP NC Department of Transportation computer to identify and locate needed parts; issuing parts to shop mechanics; and maintaining records of all open purchase orders. Employee is also responsible for receiving parts orders and fuel shipments from vendors; tracking purchase orders to verify charges to appropriate vehicles, and verifying the accuracy of the daily summary of charges to individual vehicles.
Qualification and Special Requirements
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL with endorsements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must possess knowledge and experience in automotive equipment, repair and maintenance, and parts inventory procurement.
Essential Duties:
- Verifies accuracy of inventory
- Researches, identifies, and locates needed vehicle parts.
- Issues parts to shop mechanics and charges to TD-18 repair work orders.
- Receives parts orders and fuel shipments from vendors; verifies quantities; prepares orders from vendors for delivery to route mechanics at breakdowns and school parking sites; restocks inventory.
- Input material received stock into the BSIP computer.
- Maintain certification for and operates the forklift as required to off-load and store bulky, packaged supplies and parts such as tires, engine assemblies and transmissions.
- Tracks all purchase orders to verify charges to appropriate vehicles.
- Verifies accuracy of daily summary of charges to individual vehicles.
- Monitors parts usage and inventory needs; identifies appropriate vendors by using state contract internet website, bids, and local availability.
- Assist with the annual physical count of the entire warehouse inventory.
- Performs other related work as required.
Bus Position Summary
Performs semi-skilled work operating a school bus, transporting students to and from school, activities or events, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Planner.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience with at least 6 months of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.
- Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.
Essential Duties
- Performs pre- and post-trip school bus inspection; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
- Transports students to and from school, along with other activities and events.
- Cleans bus inside and out including washing, sweeping, emptying trash, etc.
- Fuels bus as needed.
- Obeys traffic laws and observes safety regulations for school bus operations.
- Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed.
- Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills.
- Records mileage; maintains records and reports.
- Performs related work as required.
Physical Requirements
- This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.
- Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Work could be in a moderately noisy location.
Special Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Applicable training will be provided.
- Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
