Main Purpose of the Role:
Oversee the Performing Arts Department. Promote and nurture the education of students by planning and tailoring courses of study. Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of students. Proactively communicates with parents to keep them informed of student progress and potential concerns.
Key Responsibilities: (The primary tasks, functions and deliverables of the role)
- Select and plan appropriate learning and teaching activities that are in alignment with Henderson International School standards and the Henderson International Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles.
- Oversee curriculum and vertical alignment from EC-8th grade.
- Exercise good classroom management focused on Responsive Classroom with the use of fair and consistent expectations of behavior along with appropriate natural consequences that are clearly articulated to the students.
- Encourage students to ask questions and to express their challenges and concerns, and to take responsibility for their own growth and learning.
- Know and use a wide range of assessment strategies consistent with course content and learning objectives.
- Provide performing opportunities within the school and community, both in and outside of school hours.
- Maintain and manage performing arts supplies inventory.
- Provide reports on student progress and maintain open communication in ensuring that these reports are accurate and constructive.
- Differentiate instruction and assessment to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Develop lessons that engage students in higher order thinking and problem-solving.
- Provide a safe and nurturing learning environment in which students can take intellectual risks.
- Create a stimulating, challenging, and organized learning environment with effective use of (classroom) displays.
- Collaborate with academic teachers for cross-curricular assignments and/or projects.
- Attend and participate in staff development programs, faculty events and meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Create an atmosphere of mutual respect.
- Assist students in taking responsibility for their own actions and choices.
- Encourage students to set realistic goals and to use their time in a constructive and balanced manner.
- Attend functions in support of school and community.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction within the appropriate content area and/or grade level.
- Ability to understand and articulate all the elements, goals, and instructional best practice strategies embodied in the Henderson Academic Plan.
- Ability to function as a student achievement advocate and advisor (middle school).
- Outstanding listening and presentation skills.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective organizational skills including but not limited to lesson planning, implementing units of study, differentiating instruction, designing and implementing assessments, analyzing data to inform instructional choices.
- Ability to monitor student progress and report information in a timely manner.
- Ability to manage, delegate and monitor tasks.
- Ability to mentor and coach students and colleagues.
- Highly developed collaborative leadership skills and the ability to work well with others as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritize and to expend allotted resources in alignment with stated academic priorities.
- Demonstrate in your actions the Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles of the school.
- Ability to foster and maintain a positive school climate.
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s degree
Preferred: Master’s degree, State license / certification
Experience:
Required: Demonstrated knowledge and experience developing and assessing curriculum using curriculum mapping software and adapting instruction to meet the individual needs of students.
Experience with integration of instructional technology.
Prior Knowledge:
Required: Min. of 3 years in a high-achieving classroom environment.
