Job Summary

  • Responsible for the assessment and identification of learning needs; the development, implementation and evaluation of educational activities for Trauma Services. 
  • Responsible for focusing on activities on the health care team on the achievement of optimal patient outcomes and appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of assigned services according to hospital policy, regulatory requirements, organizational expectations and the American College of Surgeons standards.

 

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing or BSN preferred   

Minimum Work Experience

  • Two years of RN experience required with one year of ED or Critical Care experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Registered Nurse
  • Trauma outcomes and Performance (TOPIC) within 3 months
  • Optimal Course within 3 months
  • TNCC within 12 months of hire
  • Expectations to become a TNCC instructor within 2 years
  • PALS and/or ENPC within 12 months of hire
  • Expectation to become an ENPC instructor within 2 years
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIH

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency in Trauma Nursing with the ability to develop, implement, evaluate and teach education activities for the trauma services.
  • Role models positive behaviors at all times. Collaborates in promoting professional working relationships with peers, subordinates, superiors, and various departments.  Is committed to continually improving the standard of performance for self and team.  Hold others accountable to same positive behaviors.
  • Rounding on patients and employees including documentation.
  • Assesses and identifies educational learning needs based on standards established by accrediting agencies, PI monitoring results of nursing administration/staff request.
  • Collaborates with other departmental/divisional personnel in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating overall staff programming within the framework of the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the organization.
  • Prioritizes injury prevention work based on trends identified in the trauma registry and local epidemiological data.
  • Implements at least two activities over the course of the verification cycle with specific objectives and deliverables that address separate major causes of injury in the community.
  • Demonstrates evidence of partnerships with community organizations to support their injury prevention efforts.

  • Compose letters/memorandums
  • Displays organizational responsibility for the timely development of assigned courses, classes, projects and activities in collaboration with colleagues when appropriate.
  • Routinely reviews nursing and medical assessments of trauma patients and families’ health status and resources, adding information and assisting with resolution of identified issues.
  • Coordinates the development of in-services, workshops, and/or teaching tools that effect Trauma Services as appropriate. Plans and develops educational program content based on current scientific, medical, and nursing practice.
  • Develops and delivers educational programs that include content relative to age-specific patient populations.
  • Participates in formally organized generic and/or unit specific planned orientation for hospital personnel.
  • Develops participant evaluation tools for educational offerings as appropriate. Revises educational programs and/or content and/or delivery based on review of participant evaluation summarization.
  • Maintains a competency evaluation system and performance appraisal process for employees when appropriate. Collaborates in the performance appraisal of newly employed nursing staff as requested and communicates concerns regarding an individual nursing staff members’ clinical competency to appropriate nursing managers when warranted.
  • Participates in the personnel selection process of any individual nominated to conduct a specific topic program presentation. Provides feedback and assistance to division nursing preceptors when needed. Informs management and makes recommendations based on the educational progress or need of personnel.
  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues for patient care and unit function and managers situations in a reduced risk manner.
  • Performance Improvement Standards: Provides input into Nursing PI activities and standards development as requested. Develops educational programs related to PI monitoring results. Assists with PI review and extraction of data for registry purposes.
  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
