Hendricks County Job Description
Title : Court Reporter
FLSA Status : Non-exempt
Department : Superior Court Administration
Purpose of Position : Prepares and maintains the record of court proceedings and assists in the general operation of the Court
Essential Functions :
Records and reports all court proceedings. This includes keeping an accurate record of all oral evidence given, including questions and answers; keeping an accurate record of all rulings of the Judge concerning the admission and rejection of evidence; and keeping an accurate record of all objections and exceptions offered by attorneys as well as the Judges ruling
Makes accurate and timely case entries in the Odyssey case management system summarizing the proceeding
Uses the case management system for a variety of functions, including appeals, tracking and entering data on cases, processing Court orders and other documents, calendaring cases set for hearings or trials, and running periodic reports
Takes custody of case evidence according to statutory requirements, including inventorying items, packaging, labeling, and filing in evidence room. Disposes of obsolete evidence and exhibits annually according to statute, retention schedule, and local court rules
Records and transcribes depositions for pauper cases
When requested, provides all or any portion of a proceeding by producing a true and accurate written transcript to the requesting party in compliance with Indiana Rules of Appellate Procedure
Makes entries in INcite for various state agencies including the BMV, Department of Correction, and Protection Order Registry
Serves as liaison to attorneys, judges, or other local officials, providing information relating to court hearings and charges
Prepares and mails juror summons and special questionnaires, if necessary
Responds to questions from prospective jurors regarding deferrals and exemptions from jury service
For all jury trials, secures and maintains for inclusion in the record the following : all juror qualification forms, all attorney strike sheets, all exhibits offered, all notes to and from jury, all instructions given to jury, all verdict forms submitted and returned by jury, and the foreperson's certificate
Provides clerical support to the Judge as requested, including contacting attorneys on specific matters, setting up conference calls, and drafting orders and documents for the Judge's review and signature
Maintains and ensures security of confidential files, such as presentence investigation and psychiatric reports, sealed documents, and the Judge's personal and confidential notes
Responds to inquiries, complaints, and concerns as they arise as well as general inquiries from the media. Answers questions concerning the general operation of the Court and directs attorneys and members of the public to the appropriate location
Complies with the applicable provisions of the Indiana Code of Judicial Conduct

Education & Qualification Requirements :
High school diploma or GED
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
Excellent time management
Ability to deal with other people effectively and tactfully
Ability to operate basic office equipment
Good organizational skills
Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing
Attention to detail
Ability to work independently
Responsibility :
Incumbent works under established guidelines and procedures. Errors in work usually result in loss of time to the department and inconvenience to parties

Working relationships include the members of the local judiciary; fellow court employees; attorneys; self-represented litigants; members of the public; and members of other county departments, including, but not limited to, the Prosecutors Office, the Chief Public Defender, the Probation Department, the Sheriffs Department, Work Release, and the Clerks Office
