What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corrections Supervisor - Adult Corrections Facility position at Hennepin County?

The Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR) is seeking a Corrections Supervisor for the Adult Corrections Facility (ACF). This position will supervise staff and resident activities to ensure security of the facility, control and safety of residents, and the enforcement of Minnesota laws and Department of Corrections licensing standards.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the Hennepin County Adult Correctional Facility at 1145 Shenandoah Lane North, Plymouth, MN 55447. There is no public transportation to this location. This position requires working a flexible schedule including non-traditional hours to support 24/7 operations with rotating duty supervisor responsibilities.

New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:
  • Enforce Minnesota laws, Department of Corrections rules (Chapter 2911), and federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards as they pertain to prisoner confinement, security regulations, rules of conduct, and work rules.
  • Interview and assist in staff selection and training; coach and mentor staff in their professional development; evaluate and document employee performance; initiate disciplinary actions; coordinate shift meetings and conduct formal one-on-one meetings with staff.
  • Complete administrative tasks associated with the Offender Management System (OMS) including but not limited to, verifying sentence calculations, appointments, and written reports, determining eligibility for Electronic Home Monitoring utilizing a triage process, and overseeing and troubleshooting institutional counts.
  • Coordinate and supervise staff response to emergencies within the facility (medical, fire, security, safety, disorder, etc.); ensure that all emergencies are documented.
  • Ensure that appropriate levels of physical force are used when necessary to control and/or restrain resisting and uncooperative intractable residents.
  • Resolve resident complaints; manage concerns and complex issues reported by residents and document results; determine the disposition of minor resident disciplinary actions.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in corrections, law enforcement, or related criminal justice or behavioral/social science field.
    • Two or more years of full-time college or vocational/technical coursework in one of the fields listed above and two or more years of full-time equivalent work experience as a correctional officer, juvenile correctional officer, or providing direct care to high-risk youth in a residential facility.
    • Four or more full-time years of experience as a correctional officer, juvenile correctional officer, or in a position providing direct care to high-risk youth in a residential facility.
  • Note: Completion of an Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certificate from an approved school may be substituted for one year of relevant coursework or experience.
  • Note: One year of experience as a lead worker in a correctional facility may be substituted for two years of the experience listed above.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have: 
  • Experience: 
    • As a lead worker and/or supervisor in a correctional facility.
    • Performing supervisory tasks such as written employee performance appraisals, disciplined employees, trained employees, signed or authorized employee timecards, etc. 
    • Working with customers or clients from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to:
    • Develop the competency and display the willingness to actively support the organization's and the ACF's efforts with regard to equity, inclusion, and eliminating disparities racial or otherwise. 
    • Establish and maintain professional relationships with all staff and vendors to foster a respectful and collaborative workplace.
    • Model pro-social behavior to correctional clients and staff by asking and responding to questions appropriately, demonstrating empathy toward all individuals, and managing stressful situations calmly and according to county policy.
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; write detailed reports.

Under facility licensing requirements, positions with the DOCCR are required to undergo a Department of Human Services Background Study (MS 245C.13). Convictions for certain crimes will have an effect on your ability to be hired according to the disqualification schedule listed in Minnesota Statute 245C.15. Individuals convicted for any level of Criminal Sexual Conduct are disqualified from being hired into any position within the DOCCR under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). Other past involvement with the criminal court system will not automatically disqualify you from working at the DOCCR; individual circumstances are reviewed and evaluated confidentially. If you do not know your exact conviction information, you can refer to your sentencing order or contact the county where you were convicted.
 
*Final candidates may be required to complete a drug test that may include testing for cannabis. In addition, Under Minn. Stat. 144.445, subd. 2, an applicant or employee commissioned at the Hennepin County correctional facilities (Juvenile Detention Center and Adult Corrections Facility) are required to undergo tuberculosis (TB) testing.
