What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sheriff's Detention Captain (Internal Sheriff's Office applicants only) position at Hennepin County?
This position is located at the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility located at 401 South 4th Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55415. This position requires working a flexible schedule including days, evenings, overnights, on-call, weekends, holidays, and requires being on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year.
This position is internally classified as a Sheriff's Detention Captain.

In this position, you will:
- Direct the security, custody, and control of pre-trial inmates held in the Hennepin County Jail.
- Collaborate with leadership team on development and interpretation of departmental policies and procedures.
- Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of supervisors, law enforcement, detention, and support personnel assigned to the division; recommend commendations and maintain discipline.
- Prepare division budget and annual report; participate in Sheriff's Office planning.
- Coordinate divisional operations with other Sheriff's Office divisions, county departments, and other detention and law enforcement agencies.
- Prepare and transmit communications, instructions, and procedures; maintain effective public relations.
- Provide leadership to further department-based strategies that align with county goals, mission and core values for diversity, equity & inclusion.
Need to have:
- Eight years or more of experience as a detention deputy, correctional officer, detention or correctional supervisor, or licensed peace officer, including five years or more of experience as a detention/law enforcement supervisor in the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
- Availability for emergency callback 24 hours a day and to be subject for reassignment.

- Philosophy, principles, methods, practices, and techniques of jail management.
- Ability to:
- Plan, organize, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other public officials, departmental members, and the general public.
- Demonstrate a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work and interactions.
