What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sheriff's Lieutenant (Internal Sheriff's Office applicants only) position at Hennepin County?
Location and hours:
This position requires flexibility in hours and includes scheduled on-call shifts, watch command duty, and being subject to emergency call-out 24 hours a day.
About the position:
This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office to apply for this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.
In this position, you will:
- Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of law enforcement staff and support staff.
- Communicate and interpret administrative and policy directives to staff and maintain discipline and morale; make recommendations and disciplinary action.
- Coordinate the functions of the division or unit with other divisions and law enforcement agencies.
- Prepare or assist with divisional budget requests, annual reports, and other reports.
- Oversee maintenance of divisional records and requisition of supplies and equipment.
- Determine divisional training needs and ensure they are met.
- Interview suspects, complainants, and witnesses; testify in court.
- Attend public meetings requiring a representative of the division.
- Provide leadership to further department-based strategies that align with county goals, mission and core values for diversity, equity & inclusion.
Need to have:
- Five or more years of approved law enforcement experience, including at least one year of experience as a law enforcement supervisor at the rank of sergeant or above.
- Must be licensed as a Peace Officer by the State of Minnesota.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
- Availability for emergency call-out 24 hours a day and be subject to reassignment and to work different shifts including weekends, holidays, and a rotating schedule.

- Experience supervising, developing, and maintaining effective working relationships with staff and internal customers; ability to mentor/coach staff.
- Ability to work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office serves the county's 1.2 million residents. State law mandates most of the sheriff's office duties, including managing the county jail, providing security to the district court, and patrolling the waterways in the county.
