Description
Hennepin County is seeking veterans to serve as mentors to veterans who are accepted into the 4th District Veterans Treatment Court. Veterans Treatment Court serves justice-involved veterans struggling with substance use disorder, mental health and/or co-occurring disorders. Participating veterans complete a Veterans Court-ordered treatment plan while connecting to additional support, including help accessing their VA benefits.
Mentors support their assigned mentee in successfully completing the requirements of their treatment plan. Mentors help their assigned mentee access veteran benefits and other resources, in partnership with Hennepin County Veteran Services. Mentors serve as a compassionate mentor, advocate, comrade and ally.

Location and hours:
This Veterans Treatment Court mentor volunteer role is hybrid serving both remotely and meeting in-person at least once per week for 1-2 hours in our community across Hennepin County.
About the volunteer position type:
This is an advertisement for an unpaid, volunteer position.
In this volunteer position, you will:
- Support and mentor veterans 1-2 hours per week for one year in Veterans Treatment Court.
- Successfully complete the virtual mentor orientation and training.
- Gain knowledge to reduce stigma regarding veteran mental health and substance abuse.
- Support and back-up other mentors and mentees.
- Receive support from the Veterans Treatment Court Mentor Coordinator and other staff.
Nice to have:
- Experience with veteran substance use disorder and recovery and other diagnosed mental illness.
- Ability to be patient and understanding of the challenges of transitioning from the military.
- Good interpersonal skills.
