What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer: WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program position at Hennepin County?
Description
Each summer, WIC partners with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to provide $30 to WIC families to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers’ markets. Volunteers work in WIC clinics, assisting WIC staff in handing out vouchers and educating families on basic nutrition topics & how to use their farmers’ market benefits. The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program starts on June 1 st and ends September 30 th , but you do not have to be available for the full period to volunteer. Ideally, the time commitment expected is a minimum of 3 hours per week for most weeks between June 3 rd and August 30 th .
We are primarily looking for volunteers with previous nutrition education or experience, such as undergraduate and graduate students in nutrition and dietetics, former WIC staff, and those with degrees in nutrition.
Location and hours:
South Minneapolis WIC clinic, 2215 East Lake Street
NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center WIC clinic, 2220 Plymouth Avenue N
Northwest Family Service Center WIC clinic, 7051 Brooklyn Boulevard
Clinic hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with extended hours until 6 PM on Tuesday at South Minneapolis, Wednesday at the Northwest location, and Thursday at NorthPoint.

In This Volunteer Position, You Will
- Provide farmers’ market vouchers to eligible families.
- Explain the process of how to use vouchers at the farmers’ market.
- Help families locate a farmers’ market that is convenient to them.
- Hand out promotional materials such as stickers and vegetable seeds.
- Inform about what produce is currently available at farmers’ markets.
- Educate on the nutritional value of various fruits and vegetables.
- Provide ideas on how to select, prepare, and serve fruits and vegetables.
- Use Language Line interpreters (or your existing language skills) with families who speak languages other than English.
- Communicate closely with WIC nutritionists.
