The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute is currently seeking multiple individuals to fill our Research Assistant, Jr. position. This position will assist in various types of clinical research studies within Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Department, the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
This position is a part-time/casual role working variable hours including nights and weekends. Following a training period, this position would be expected to work in an on-call capacity.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist in the conduct of research, quality improvement, and public health surveillance projects in the Emergency Department, including informed consent, patient enrollments for investigator-initiated, NIH-, and industry-funded projects, and the related data collection and entry. May administer and score psychological, intellectual, and/or other medical assessments and tests. May accurately disburse funds to study participants and accurately reconcile grant accounts. May assist in training research volunteers on studies. Shall work on-call hours.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Carry out clinical research protocols

- Understand enrollment and data collection measures for all ED studies and projects
- Conduct informed consent discussions with patients
- Record vitals, collect blood or other samples, coordinate enrollment tests and procedures
- Instruct and inform hospital staff about patients' participation in research
- Draw and run blood samples through laboratory devices per protocols, as needed
- Document and consistently maintains detailed records
- May enter research data into databases, monitor/clean data, or perform further analyses
- May assist with preparation of abstracts, posters, manuscripts
- May accurately disburse funds to study participants
- May assist in training research and QI interns on studies
- Must complete institutionally required trainings in a timely fashion
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education/Experience:
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be completion of some college and six (6) months of patient care and/or clinical research experience. College graduates strongly preferred.
Licensure/Registration/Certification: Current certification as a health care provider (MA, PCA, EMT-B) or phlebotomy training preferred but not required.
Skill, Knowledge & Ability (SKA):
Requires interaction with a diverse patient population. General knowledge of clinical research study design, protocols, data collection. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, patient care providers, and HHRI staff. Demonstrated proficiency with data entry for large, complex projects. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook; previous experience with electronic patient care records and electronic clinical databases preferred. Ability to be trained to operate lab instruments necessary to conduct research protocols. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work within teams and to be self-motivated. Ability to adhere to institutional safety protocols, established guidelines of good clinical practice in clinical research policy and procedure, follow protocols for study design. Displays high standards of attendance, punctuality, maintains confidentiality, and effective use of time. Ability to complete in-person and online training in a timely fashion.
