Job Overview:
The Automotive Shop Foreman is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of an automotive repair shop. This includes managing and leading the team of technicians, ensuring high-quality service, maintaining shop equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and delivering excellent customer service. The Foreman will also work closely with service advisors, monitor workflow, and ensure that all repairs are completed on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Supervision:
- Lead, supervise, and motivate a team of automotive technicians to ensure efficient workflow.
- Assign work orders to technicians, ensuring that skills are appropriately matched with tasks.
- Monitor technician performance and provide guidance, training, and support to improve their skills and efficiency.
- Handle technician conflicts and performance issues professionally.
- Quality Control & Safety:
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance services meet industry standards and customer expectations.
- Conduct inspections and reviews of vehicles before and after repairs to ensure quality control.
- Oversee shop safety practices and ensure compliance with OSHA and other relevant safety regulations.
- Manage the cleanliness and organization of the shop to create a safe and productive work environment.
- Inventory & Equipment Management:
- Oversee and manage the shop’s parts and tool inventory to ensure adequate stock levels.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and in good working condition.
- Collaborate with the shop manager to order parts, tools, and supplies as necessary.
- Operational Efficiency:
- Optimize workflow within the shop to minimize downtime and ensure timely completion of jobs.
- Monitor repair progress and make adjustments to schedules as needed to meet customer deadlines.
- Collaborate with management on operational goals and improvements to maximize productivity.
- Administrative Duties:
- Assist with creating and managing work schedules for technicians.
- Help develop shop policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Maintain records of repairs and services performed.
- Track and report on repair trends and performance metrics.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; automotive technical degree or certification preferred.
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification preferred.
- 5 years of experience in automotive repair and maintenance.
- 2 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostics, and repair techniques.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient with shop management software and basic computer systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry tools, parts, and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in an environment with exposure to noise, fumes, and chemicals.
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced automotive repair shop.
- May require working evenings or weekends depending on shop hours.
