General Statement of Duties
Under the direction of the school principal in a public separate program, the special education teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students within a social integrated services model to ensure that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are included to the greatest extent possible into the general education population.
OPPORTUNITY SCHOOL
Since the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools designated select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools through the HCPS Career Ladder. The new pathway within the Career Ladder assigns schools, selected by HCPS, additional staffing resources and specialized professional learning. Essential Duties
Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence based teaching practices (reinforcement, prompting, visual schedules, antecedent based intervention, etc.). Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work. Demonstrates understanding of functions of behavior and is knowledgeable of interventions matched to each. Experience with a variety of evidence-based instructional practices as well as data collection and its utilization. Knowledge of special education laws, policies and practices. Proficient with Microsoft and/or Google Suite and other related educational software.
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in special education. Endorsement in Special Education - Adapted Curriculum and a master's degree in special education are preferred.
Additional Information
The minimum salary for this 11-month position is $63,921 (bachelor's) or $66,989 (master's). The salary quoted is based upon the 2024-25 salary scale and is subject to change with the adoption of the 2025-26 financial plan. Annual salaries are prorated based upon the actual work begin date. This position qualifies for the $3,500 Opportunity School Stipend.

Essential Duties
- Communicates consistently with parents, general education teachers, administrators, support personnel, and related service providers
- Manages classroom instruction and behavior, taking into account individual student level of academic ability and behavioral/emotional needs
- Develops and implements IEP (Individualized Education Program) that meets the student's educational needs, works with the educational team and parents to complete the IEP process
- Monitors behavior and provides positive behavior supports
- Collects and analyzes data to inform educational decision making
- Maintains accurate documentation of student progress
- Maintains a structured, routine-driven environment
- Uses visual supports in the classroom
- Provides work direction and supervision to assigned instructional assistants
- Provides a language rich environment
- Collaborates with general education teachers and related service providers
- Creates lesson plans that are differentiated for individual student needs
- Coordinates student participation in state and district assessments as determined by the IEP
- Assists in the development of FBA and BIP and implement BIP
- Assists students with learning personal hygiene
- Implements best practices and research-based interventions related to students with ASD
- Attends faculty and other required meetings
- Participates in ongoing professional development to remain abreast of current trends and best practices
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Regular attendance is required
