General Statement of Duties

This is a split itinerant position that will provide direct school counseling services to English language learners at both Freeman High School and Hermitage High School.

This assignment will provide school counseling services at both Freeman High School and Hermitage High School to directly support a caseload of newcomer multilingual learners with limited or interrupted former education. In frequent collaboration with the ESL department and other school counselors within the school counseling department, this position is responsible for contributing to the development, management and delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic achievement, social / emotional development, and college and career readiness needs of all students in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success and the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.

This position, in collaboration with other school counselors in the department, is responsible for the development, management and delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic achievement, social / emotional development, and college and career readiness needs of all students in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success and the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.

Essential Duties

The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Professional Duties

  • Help students navigate critical and emergency situations. This includes recognizing and responding to student mental and / or behavioral health crisis; completing suicide risk screenings; reporting suspected child abuse and neglect; participating in the threat assessment process; safety planning; offering short-term intervention, referral and follow up; and Tier I, II, and III crisis counseling supports in the aftermath of a school-community emergency / crisis. Work collaboratively with school-based mental health providers in assigned schools.
  • Facilitate scheduled, ongoing goal-focused counseling sessions with individual students based on an identified area of need. Provide a warm hand-off of students requiring more than 4-6 consecutive individual counseling sessions or a higher level of intensive therapeutic intervention to a mental health clinician using an established referral pathway.
  • Provide brief, on-demand counseling support and / or evidence-based practice (EBP) provided to individual students experiencing emotional distress.
  • Provide scheduled ongoing skills-based, process, or psychoeducational counseling sessions with small groups of students with similar developmental or situational challenges with the goal of achieving healthy personal adjustment and coping with the stress of changing / complex environments.
  • Provide brief, on-demand conflict resolution and mediation with small groups of identified students.
  • Provide school counseling whole group lessons, sessions, and activities delivered to all students addressing the Academic, College & Career Readiness, Social / Emotional and Mental Health & Wellness domains.
  • Provide school-wide programming that directly promotes or addresses an identified need in the areas of student attendance, behavior or achievement.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate activities and initiatives to promote multiple post-secondary pathways and college and career readiness for all students.
  • Work with students to analyze their abilities, interests, skills and achievement to help them develop immediate and long-range educational, career and personal goals. Support the development and maintenance of Academic Career Planning Portfolios (Elementary) and Academic Career Plans (Secondary) for all students.
  • Assist students in exploring educational opportunities available in the division, making appropriate course selections, and selecting programs of study that support their educational and career goals.
  • Provide parent / guardian workshops and trainings, as needed.
  • Provide faculty / staff workshops and trainings, as needed.
  • Provide consultative services (ie. providing information to and receiving information from individuals or school-based teams) to support a student's needs and to assist in identifying and addressing barriers to student achievement.
  • Collaborate with school stakeholders to design and implement support services or programs that promote student achievement, attendance, and behavior and advocate for equity and access for all students.
  • Participate as a member on Intervention, Child Find, Eligibility, Positive Behavior Interventions & Support, School-Based Mental Health, School Quality teams and other leadership and problem-solving teams, as assigned.
  • Participate in division, state, and national professional development activities as appropriate and incorporate learning into professional practice.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Gather and analyze relevant data to guide annual program planning, inform practice, and evaluate program impact on student achievement, behavior, and attendance.
  • Provide Section 504 case management services
  • Provide other duties, as assigned.

Must have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum, instruction, and counseling / guidance theory and practice. Counseling skills must include problem identification / analysis skills and basic therapy resolution. Communication skills, both oral and written, must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of the clientele, professional staff, and other community agencies. Must be able to organize and carry out student activity programs; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-graduate certification / licensure / endorsement in school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education required.
  • Master's degree in school counseling required.
  • Certified Trauma Practitioner preferred.
  • Candidates with experience in providing direct school counseling service to English Language Learner are encouraged to apply.
  • Additional Information

    The annual salary for the assignment will be prorated to the official start date.

  • Minimum annual starting salary : $66,989.42 (Masters)
