What are the responsibilities and job description for the APPRENTICE, FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN position at Henry County Government?
The purpose of this USDOL-registered apprentice position is to learn to perform a variety of routine maintenance and light repair of County-owned buildings and facilities. Incumbents will perform in the capacity of a general handyman providing routine maintenance and upkeep of assigned buildings or facilities.
This position requires enrollment in a facilities maintenance certification or degree program from Southern Crescent Technical College.
Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and enrollment in a facilities maintenance certification or degree program from Southern Crescent Technical College, an accredited technical college. Must be enrolled in OJT program to acquire knowledge of commercial building/construction and repair, and skilled trades such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, and HVAC. This is a full time apprentice entry level position.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

- Learns to perform general maintenance and repair work on buildings, equipment, grounds, and related facilities; and performs semi-skilled manual work involving building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and drywall, masonry, custodial, or other maintenance projects.
- Learns to perform various plumbing tasks; troubleshoots plumbing problems; installs and repairs plumbing fixtures; clears and unblocks water lines and drains; repairs steam lines, toilets, sinks, faucets, drinking fountains, etc.; solders pipes; and repairs plumbing leaks.
- Learns to perform various electrical tasks; troubleshoots electrical problems; installs electrical receptacles and switches; repairs electrical components; trips or replaces breaker; and replaces light bulbs and ballasts.
- Learns to perform various tasks involving general building maintenance, carpentry, masonry, or construction projects; paints interior and exterior surfaces; performs general concrete work, plaster applications, and places sheetrock; removes, repairs, and replaces floor/ceiling tile; inspects, installs, and repairs roofs; installs, adjusts, and repairs doors and hardware; replaces windows, doors, and glass panes; lubricates hardware; and performs related maintenance and repair activities.
- Determines amount of materials needed to complete projects; provides cost projections as requested; gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies; monitors inventory levels; and orders new or replacement materials as required.
- Participates in the setup and removal of tables, chairs, stages, etc., for daily meetings and classes and?special events.
- Assists in ensuring that operation, construction, and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards; conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Learns to operate or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; operates and maintains drills, saws, hammers, screwdrivers, tape measure, and other equipment.
- Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
