What are the responsibilities and job description for the APPRENTICE, LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN position at Henry County Government?
The purpose of this USDOL-registered apprentice position is to acquire the knowledge to perform grounds-keeping, landscaping, and general maintenance tasks in County parks and facilities.
This position requires enrollment in landscape management certification or degree program from Southern Crescent Technical College.
Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and related experience in grounds-keeping, landscaping or related field, and enrollment in landscape management certification or degree program from Southern Crescent Technical College, an accredited technical college. This is a full time apprentice entry level position.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. May be required to attain certification as commercial pesticide applicator within two years of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, heights, confined spaces, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, or rude/irate customers.

- Learns to perform a variety of landscaping duties; mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from parks and grounds areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; applies herbicides and pesticides; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; aerates and spreads grass seed; and services irrigation systems.
- Learns to maintain inventory of equipment, parts, and supplies; gathers supplies and equipment to complete work assignments; transports supplies to and from work site; initiates orders for materials and equipment needed; and maintains related documentation.
- Learns to operate or use a County vehicle and various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments such as lawn mower, weed-eater, blowers, tillers, bobcat, tractor, wheel barrel, jack hammer, sledgehammer, saws, chippers, back hoes, and other power or motorized equipment.
- Learns to perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.
- Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
