What are the responsibilities and job description for the THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SPECIALIST position at Henry County Government?
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of recreation programming, customer service, and administrative support for special needs populations for the County.
- Organizes, instructs, and supervises assigned recreational activities for special needs populations, such as sports activities, Special Olympics, social events, parties, art classes, outings and fields trips; gathers supplies and equipment; verifies completion of required forms for each participant; teaches and facilitates classes, clinics, and skills; provides information and direction; and ensures all activities comply with established rules, policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Ensures care for and monitoring of special needs participants; assists in transporting participants to and from events and activities; and monitors and assists with personal care needs, such as bath rooming, medication, etc.
- Performs customer service functions; provides information or assistance regarding services, activities, forms, procedures, fees, or other issues; responds to routine questions and complaints; research problems and initiates problem resolution; and refers complaints/problems to appropriate personnel.
- Processes participant registrations; receives requests for classes and activities; reviews registration forms for accuracy and completeness; enters information into online database and calendars; collects and records fees; and maintains related documentation.
- Monitors inventory of materials and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; and inspects equipment, fields and facilities for safety.
- Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
- Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
- Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and one (1) year of related experience in therapeutic recreation or working with special needs populations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

- Knowledge of local government operations, parks and recreation related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
