Position Description Summary

Henry Ford College presents an opportunity for an Assisted Learning Services (ALS) Associate.

This position works within the Assisted Learning Services (ALS) Division.

Assisted Learning Services, (ALS) provides disability accommodations to qualified students attending HFC. Appropriate accommodations are provided by ALS in accordance with the American Disability Act, (ADA). Among other responsibilities, the Associate will maintain specialized computer software to support testing services, serve as liaison between faculty, staff and students regarding accommodations, (to include visual impairments, hearing impairments, learning, physical and emotional disabilities) and testing services, and monitor and oversee testing services, interpreting services and assist in providing appropriate classroom accommodations in accordance with the ADA.

Anticipated Schedule : Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m. Work schedule may change based department need.

  • Associate degree required from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, or a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • 3-5 years' experience in similar position.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Minimum of one-year related work experience in a customer service or post-secondary testing services or student affairs office required (community college experience preferred).
  • Experience interpreting and explaining office policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use good judgment in handling office matters in confidential and discrete manner.
  • Ability to provide student, parent and faculty orientation of ALS services.
  • Knowledge of ADA guidelines and other federal laws and policies relating to disability services.
  • Ability to understand and meet proctor guidelines / requirements set by faculty, in accordance with ADA.
  • Strong computer / technology skills with proficiency in current word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

  • 2 years of experience working with Perkins Grant and appropriated funding for staff salaries.
  • 2 years of experience working with interpreting services, contracts and billable services.
  • Ability to coordinate assignment of interpreters for hearing impaired student classes with interpreting agency.
  • Ability to review and approve billable services for interpreting agency and provide documentation for Accounts Payable and for Perkins audits.
  • Ability to determine appropriate accommodations based on presented disability and documentation.
  • An engaging personality in meeting the public both by telephone and in the office.
  • Ability to provide student, parent and faculty orientation of ALS services.
  • Ability to use good judgment in handling office matters in confidential and discrete manner.
  • Critical thinking ability; decision-making ability.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the significance of promptly informing faculty about student eligibility and providing suitable accommodations.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to recognize and follow through on priorities and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong computer / technology skills with proficiency in current word processing, spreadsheet and database software. The desire and ability to keep current with software updates and learn new computer processes and software as needed.
  • Ability to learn the use of test-related software, Moodle, Exam Soft, Exemplify, etc.
  • Accessibility - Knowledge of tools, equipment, and technologies used to help individuals with disabilities use computer equipment and software.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to

  • Ensure appropriate proctor guidelines / requirements set by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504, and faculty in all schools at HFC.
  • Proficient use of test related software (JAWS, Dragon, Kurzweil, Zoom Text, Examsoft).
  • Liaison between faculty, staff and students regarding disability accommodations and testing services.
  • Collaborate and provide consultation regarding testing to appropriate HFC Divisions.
  • Scheduling Instructional Technicians / Testing Technicians to appropriately accommodate students per disability eligibility / requirements.
  • Use of integrated student information system(s).
  • Meet proctor guidelines / requirements set by faculty, in compliance with the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • Knowledge and ability to understand student disabilities presented, (emotional, learning, visual, hearing, physical).
  • Communicate with students, parents, faculty regarding testing process and procedures.
  • Verify time parameters and use of approved instructional materials / aids during exams.
  • Enforce testing policies and ensure proper procedures are followed for students testing.
  • Administer lockers and ensure lockers function correctly.
  • Actively observe, (on camera and in person) students at all times during testing to ensure academic honesty.
  • Report and handle academic dishonesty incidents according to policies and procedures.
  • Assist students with accessing computerized exams by providing log-in assistance.
  • Comply with various test procedures and requirements as specified by each instructor in accordance with the ADA.
  • Address testing issues and discrepancies with students, testing technicians, faculty and IT.
  • Maintain and update specialized computer software to support testing software. Serve as contact between department, IT, and testing / software companies.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot testing issues.
  • Notify facilities when table lifts are to be placed in classrooms for students using wheelchairs. Follow up with student and faculty when installed.
  • Notify IT when adaptive software is to be installed on classroom computers for students as requested by student. Follow through with computer number and notify student and faculty.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student disability records and exams.
  • Provide textbooks in alternative format as permissions coordinator for HFC. Ensure proper procedures and policies are in place per publisher(s) to obtain download in requested format. Once obtained, notify student(s) and assist in downloading to their device.
  • Assist with interpreting services assignment, invoicing and tracking of services for accuracy.
  • Monitor the adaptive equipment to ensure students are aware of available equipment, it's use and check-out procedures. Schedule students to work with Equipment Technician when training is required. Follow policies and procedures set in place to return adaptive equipment to the office.
