Position Description Summary
Henry Ford College presents an opportunity for the Director of Financial Accounting Services.
The Director of Financial Accounting Services reports to the Vice President of Finance / CFO and assists the Vice President in creating and maintaining accurate accounting records, execution of internal control procedures, and financial management functions. The Director is responsible for all financial accounting functions in relation to subordinate areas, including but not limited to General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Grant Accounting, Project Accounting, Banking, Payroll, Bursar (Student and Third-Party Accounts as well as Collections), Fixed Assets, Construction-In-Progress (CIP), and Foundation. The Director will also be responsible for coordinating and conducting the college's Annual Audit.
Core Competencies and Qualifications
- Experience : Minimum 10 years' progressive experience in accounting or finance in either public or private sector, including 5 years of supervisory experience.
- Education : Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- In-depth knowledge and experience in finance procedures and systems, proper internal control systems, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) technology including skilled use of business software applications. Fund accounting experience required. desirable.
- Must exhibit the highest level of professional integrity.
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent analytical skills.
- Must have a collaborative management style, demonstrate the ability to maintain a positive working relationship with College personnel and representatives of various external agencies, and possess the ability to work effectively with students and staff in a multicultural environment.

Provide leadership, daily supervision, scheduling, evaluation, and training for all personnel within subordinate areas using the College's established systems and procedures.Prepare and coordinate the annual financial audit, including review of supporting work papers and the oversight of required annual State of Michigan echeatment due diligence and escheatment process.Supervise the maintenance and retention of records in accordance with appropriate rules and regulations.Serve as College's Michigan Community College Business Officer Association (MCCBOA) contact. Collaborate with external consultant on annual renewal submissions .Open and close General Ledger application suite annually based on college needs / requirements.Draw approved G5 Financial Aid funds and authorized grant funds, maintaining accurate records.Serve as liaison to Information Technology Services and Institutional Research to ensure that system-generated reports are accurate, useful, and reliable as required for several necessary and mandatory accounting functions.General Accounting -
Develop and implement accounting systems and procedures conforming to GAAP and other relevant State and Federal regulations, financial policies, and financial procedures .Provide improvements as necessary in accordance with Board policies.Maintain College chart of accounts. Create, freeze, or inactivate accounts as needed.Manage general ledger account level security of all users.Review reconciliation of all general ledger balance sheet accounts.Review and approve all weekly check runs from subordinate areas. (Accounts Payable, Direct Deposits for Employees, and EPaybles (direct vendor payments) as well as coordinate weekly EPayables check run upload.Serve as Credit Card Gateway Administrator, including oversight and control of all access to the accounts. Adjust student accounts as required with appropriate documentation.Process and record property taxes (Payments, Tribunal Refunds, Audit).Oversee third party purchase card (PCARD) program. Create, freeze, or inactivate employee PCARDS as needed.Accounts Payable -
Direct the accounts payable function to ensure timely and proper payments to vendors and staff.Oversee 1099 and 1042 processing and submit required annual filings.Oversee EPayable program. Create or inactivate as needed.Grant / Project Accounting -
Oversee Grant Accounting financial procedures for all College and Foundation grants, including Project Accounting when applicable.Banking -
Conduct daily balance review / activity of all bank balances for the College and the Foundation, approving daily cash reporting and monthly bank reconciliations.Initiate, approve and release new bank wire and ACH templates as needed, maintaining proper documentation for College audit.Oversee assigning / revoking bank tokens and appropriate employee bank access based on accounting role needs.Payroll -
Oversee the College's payroll function to ensure proper payments to employees, including review and approval of various pay cycle processing and submission of annual federal and state reporting associated with payroll.Bursar (Student and Third-Party Accounts) -
Oversee student and non-student accounts receivable processes to assure timely collection. Includes assessment of tuition and fee charges to student accounts and tuition waiver billings for employees and their dependents, as allowable under employee collective bargaining agreements.Construction In Progress (Fixed Assets) -
Review monthly CIP report, creating new CIP projects as requested and freezing once complete, while providing direction on Fixed Assets capitalization.Allocate approved monies to Technology Instructional Fund (TIF) projects.Foundation -
Oversee and review internal monthly Foundation statements, quarterly Foundation Board statements, and Foundation 990 workbook, ensuring accuracy and agreement of all donor information between the College and Foundation.Additional Information
