GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision of nursing staff, is responsible for the assessment and direct care of patients on hemodialysis.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer normal saline solution via the extracorporeal system.
- Administer per initiation of hemodialysis procedure 2% xylocaine subcutaneously.
- Administer via the extracorporeal system and/or via the cannulated access site the anticoagulant heparin in the dose prescribed by the physician and monitored by the nursing staff.
CLINICAL TECHNICIAN POOL GUIDELINES:
- Responsible to the Nurse Manager of each assigned unit when working as a member of the multidisciplinary team caring for the hemodialysis patients.
- Scheduling assignments, disciplinary action and evaluations are performed by the program manager with input from the Head Nurse and/or Manager of the unit.
- Assignments will vary as to unit and length of stay depending on program needs.
- Each technician to the extent possible will be assigned to a unit for a minimum of two (2) weeks and a maximum not to exceed six (6) consecutive weeks.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- Nursing Assistant (NA), Medical Assistant (MA), or other healthcare experience preferred.
- Must successfully complete the Greenfield Health Systems dialysis training program, as a condition of continued employment.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- As a condition of continued employment, certification as a dialysis technician must be obtained (and maintained) within designated timeline of 18 months, in accordance with federal regulation.
