HJF is seeking a Scientist I in the Department of Radiology & Bioengineering to work withimaging and post-processing of research images. This position will involve developing andconducting research projects in imaging research in the Biomedical Research Imaging Core(BRIC) as well as with the MAGNUS advanced gradient, 3T head only system.

The Scientist I would be focusing on primarily on brain imaging from preclinical and human research MRI scanners. It is also desired that this position also have experience with preclinical positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission tomography (SPECT), optical imaging and computed tomography (CT). The Scientist I will be investigating a wide variety of scientific areas, mainly related to military relevant topics such as traumatic brain injury, traumatic stress and following therapeutics. The Scientist I will work with a variety of small to medium sized animals and will follow all applicable animal research laws and regulations, plus work with images from our MAGNUS MRI.

This position will be in support of the Department of Radiology and Bioengineering at theUniformed Services University (USU) in Dr. Hood’s lab. Dr. Hood is the Director of theBiomedical Research Imaging Core (BRIC), a preclinical imaging laboratory of theDepartment of Radiology that supports small animal research for USU. The BRIC has a 7Tpreclinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), PET/SPECT/CT, optical CT, in vivo and exvivo micro CT systems, ultrasound and laser speckle imaging. The BRIC also has numerousworkstations for advanced post-processing and analysis of image data. Dr. Hood also workson the MAGNUS 3T MRI system for advanced brain imaging.

Note: This work site requires that non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an imaging expert for the BRIC and a team member for the MAGNUS MRIresearch.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypothesesand designs experimental protocols.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, andensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Participates in conversations with investigators and contributes to new grant andfunding applications.
  • Responsible for preclinical MRI operations, including data storage, data processingand analysis.
  • Responsible for handling a variety of contrast agents and radiotracers in a preclinicalimaging lab.
  • Oversee the documentation of all procedures and monitoring of animals as requiredby regulations.
  • Ensure the MRI, CT and PET/SPECT/CT laboratories meet all safety and animalresearch regulations.
  • Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
  • Prepares written reports, abstracts, and manuscripts for submission to scientificjournals and conferences.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by thesupervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training forrole.
  • May participate or work with other imaging modalities as opportunities arise.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: Participate in employee hiring, disciplinary action, and startingsalaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience and knowledge with preclinical MRI.
  • Experience and knowledge with preclinical PET/CT desired.
  • Experience with rodent handling.
  • Experience with rodent injections.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $74,000-$90,000. This is not, however, aguarantee of compensation or salary. Final salary will be determined based onmarket analysis, experience, and education.

Salary : $74,000 - $90,000
