Job Purpose
The Application Developer I plays a key role on the Digital Platforms and Innovation team. In this position, you will help design quality technical solutions to drive Herc Rentals’ digital strategy. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills coupled with the ability to operate in a customer-focused, fast-paced environment. You will work alongside a collaborative team, contribute to exciting projects, and help shape our digital footprint.
What you will do...
Software Development:
- Conceptualize and develop new software programs and applications as part of a larger team.
- Design, code, test, and analyze software programs and applications—including research, documentation, and modification throughout the production lifecycle.
- Implement software solutions that ensure security, integrity, scalability, and consistency.
Project Contributions:
- Serve as a key contributor in requirements sessions for critical initiatives.
- Create and modify complex application programs based on requirement specifications.
- Identify opportunities for improving applications (e.g., performance, user experience).
- Identify cost-saving opportunities related to infrastructure and third-party integrations.
Collaboration & Support:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams such as AWS Cloud, Infrastructure, and Network to ensure seamless integration and deployment.
- Provide technical support on digital applications to both internal and external customers.
- Manage and support third-party devices, firmware, and API integrations.
Quality & Security:
- Assist with vulnerability remediation across platforms, following best practices for security.
- Follow established change management processes to maintain application stability.
- Troubleshoot high-priority (P1) application issues, offering swift resolution to minimize business and customer impact.
- Enhance application security based on findings and recommendations from IT security.
Project Delivery:
- Deliver projects within budget and timelines, ensuring quality and adherence to requirements.
- Proactively identify and escalate project issues and concerns to keep initiatives on track.
Requirements
Technical Skills:
- Hands-on experience in full-stack development using:
- JavaScript/Angular/React (frontend)
- Python/Java (backend)
- MySQL/MSSQL (database)
- Familiarity with AWS or Azure cloud environments is a plus.
- Experience with the full software development lifecycle and delivering software solutions using modern technologies.
- Knowledge of modern CI/CD tools such as Git, Docker, Jenkins, etc.
- Understanding of common software design patterns.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or technical certifications in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field preferred.

Skills
- Excellent interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills are required for working in project environments with internal, external, and customer teams.
- Programming/scripting experience and knowledge of the software development life cycle are preferred.

- Strong attention to detail, with a proactive and positive approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to translate business processes and technical language for audiences with varying levels of expertise.
