The position of Sheet Metal Worker is responsible for assisting in the fabrication, assembly and of sheet metal products as defined in the training curriculum for 1 Year Sheet Metal Workers Apprenticeship program. M-Th 2:15 pm-12:45 am. $23.00 per hour.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to interpret documents and instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form. Ability to organize and prioritize job projects and requirements.
ATTENDANCE DEMANDS: Attendance is required Monday through Friday within as established by the Shop Superintendent. Employee may be required to work overtime.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to grasp and lift and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb and balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

- Reading and Interpreting Shop Drawings & Work Orders: Understanding technical drawings, schematics, and work orders to determine project specifications.
- Material Selection and Preparation: Choosing appropriate types of sheet metal (galvanized, aluminum, copper, etc.) and material thickness based on project needs and cutting, bending, or shaping it to size.
- Measuring and Layout: Using measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, or rulers) to mark and layout metal sheets according to design requirements.
- Cutting and Shaping: Operating equipment like shears, saws, lasers, and presses to cut or form metal into desired shapes.
- Fabrication: Fabricating parts through hammering, welding, riveting, bolting, or roll-forming and fabricating them specified standards.
- Assembly: Joining and sealing sheet metal components using various methods, tools and techniques.
- Quality Inspection: Ensuring the finished products meet specifications, dimensions, and safety standards through proper inspection.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Performing basic repairs on damaged or worn sheet metal components and maintaining tools and equipment.
- Safety Compliance: Following industry safety guidelines, wearing protective gear, and maintaining a clean and hazard-free work environment.
- Collaboration: Working with engineers, construction teams, or project managers to ensure deadlines and design specifications are met.
- A High School Diploma or GED is required.
- On-the-job and related training is also required.
- Workers must adhere to the Colorado Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No.9 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Pass pre-employment qualifications per the Local No. 9 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Follow specific directions. Perform a variety of duties that may often change. Work within standards of accuracy.
- Repeat tasks of short duration according to a set procedure.
- Evaluate information using measurable standards.
- Plan, layout, fabricate, assemble and repair sheet metal parts, equipment and products, utilizing a knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques.
- Use hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling and installing sheet metal products.
- Select gauge and type of sheet metal such as galvanized iron, copper, steel or aluminum.
- Use nonmetallic material, such as plastic or fiberglass, according to product specifications.
- Layout and mark dimensions and reference lines on material using scribers, dividers, squares and rulers.
- Apply knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to develop and trace patterns to product or parts (or use templates).
- Set up and operate fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses...forming rolls and routers to cut, bend block and form or straighten materials.
- Shape metal material over an anvil, block or other form, using hand tools.
- Trim, file, grind, de-burr, buff and smooth surfaces, using hand tools or portable power tools.
- Weld, bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk and bond component parts to assemble products...using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Inspect assemblies for conformance to specifications using measuring instruments required.
- Repair and maintain sheet metal products.
- May operate computer aided drafting (CAD) equipment to develop scale drawings of products or systems.
- May operate laser beam cutter or plasma cutter to cut patterns from sheet metal.
