What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Software Engineer position at HERE Technologies?
What's the role?
About HERE Tour Planning:
Join us in tackling one of the most fascinating challenges in logistics: the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP).
HERE Tour Planning enables efficient multi-vehicle route optimization, helping businesses plan smarter and faster delivery tours.
We use precise map data, real-time traffic, road restrictions, and driver preferences to create practical, reliable routes. Our goal is to simplify complex logistics, cut travel time, lower costs, and improve delivery operations.
Beyond optimization, our system accounts for key constraints like time windows, vehicle capacity, compliance rules, and driver preferences—ensuring plans are both efficient and realistic. The result: cost savings, better delivery accuracy, and improved driver experience.
If you're driven to solve real-world challenges with smart algorithms and scalable solutions, we’d love to have you on board.

About the team:
We are a diverse, passionate team of experts dedicated to solving complex logistics challenges and delivering impactful solutions. Committed to quality and innovation, we collaborate to shape the future of logistics while continuously growing our skills.
Our tech stack includes Rust, Python, Postgres, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform - empowering us to build scalable, high-performance systems.
As a key team member, you’ll advocate for our customers, define quality standards, and help deliver solutions that truly make a difference.
Role:
As a Backend Developer, you’ll play a key role in leveraging HERE map content to extract and curate data that enhances logistics operations and enables practical, driver-friendly tours. Your work will directly impact the Tour Planning service, providing valuable geospatial insights such as traffic patterns, road attributes, restrictions, and POIs (e.g., parking, break locations, EV chargers, fuel stations). This data will be processed, structured, and exposed through REST APIs, powering our routing and optimization services.
With a strong focus on location-based technologies and clustering algorithms, you’ll develop high-performance, scalable solutions in a Rust-based codebase. Python will serve as your prototyping and experimentation tool, allowing you to test and refine innovative ideas.
This is an individual contributor role (not a team leader).
Key Responsibilities:
Extract, process, and curate geospatial data from HERE maps to create valuable datasets for logistics optimization.
Develop and maintain backend services that expose map-based insights (traffic, road attributes, POIs, and restrictions) via REST APIs.
Design and optimize clustering algorithms to structure and process large-scale map data efficiently.
Implement scalable and high-performance solutions in Rust, ensuring reliability and maintainability.
Solve complex geospatial and routing challenges, improving logistics and driver operations efficiency.
Manage relational (PostgreSQL) databases, ensuring optimized data storage and retrieval.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Tour Planning, architects, and product teams, to integrate map-driven insights into logistics workflows.
Leverage cloud platforms like AWS to deploy, manage, and optimize backend services.
Who are you?
Key Qualifications:
- 8 years of backend development experience, delivering scalable, data-driven solutions.
- Proficiency in Rust (or strong C /Scala developers who are willing to learn Rust) focusing on performant and extensible code.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, particularly in handling large-scale datasets and optimizing queries.
- Solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and system design, preferably for geospatial data processing.
- Experience developing REST APIs and working in microservice architectures.
Good to have:
- Familiarity with Python for prototyping, data processing, or research-oriented tasks.
- Experience working with vehicle routing problems, logistics applications, geospatial data, clustering techniques, or location-based technologies.
- A background in integer programming, combinatorial optimization, mathematical modeling is a strong advantage.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS preferred), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
What Do We Offer?
Work on the development of high-scale services, managing thousands of data processing pipelines
Innovative and modern technologies
Truly international team of fantastic & talented people from 60 countries worldwide, working from strong tech hubs located in Europe, the US, and Asia, along with multiple smaller locations
