The Position: We're looking for a Northern Michigan-based, driven, detail-oriented multiplatform editor to join us in our downtown Traverse City office by the bay. The ideal candidate is an editorial and digital all-rounder and production powerhouse who will excel at the following responsibilites.
Responsibilities:
- Calendar Mastery - Keep the editorial calendars for both digital and print organized, balanced, and up-to-date. You'll ensure no deadline is missed and every project moves from inception to final product.
- Content Coordination - Work hand-in-hand with the editorial team, freelancers, and contributors to assign and edit content across both our monthly print issue and digital channels.
- Editing & Writing - Assign, edit, and publish articles, ensuring content maintains the magazine's voice and style. Contribute as needed, including departments, digital stories, social media, and collaborating on features.
- Freelancer Liaison - Maintain strong relationships with our roster of freelance writers, photographers, and designers. Keep everyone on the same page when it comes to story requirements, deadlines, and payment schedules.
- Process Management - Ensure editorial processes run smoothly. This means preparing for weekly meetings, comfortably working within platforms like Slack, Monday, and PageProof, and keeping an eye on the workflow and flagging any bottlenecks before they become problems.
Your Skills:
- Editorial Expertise - Strong editing, writing, and proofreading skills are non-negotiable. You know how to clean up copy, tighten sentences, and polish the writing to make sure it's ready for print and digital.
- Versatility - From web content to long-form print features, you're not afraid to dive into any style of writing or editing. You're comfortable switching gears between quick-turnaround pieces and more in-depth editorial work.
- Project Management Skills - You have a knack for - and love of - keeping things organized. You've got a natural ability to juggle multiple tasks while ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
- Collaborative Spirit - You're a team player through and through. You bring energy, ideas, and a sense of humor to every project.
- Digital Acumen - Comprehensive understanding of best SEO practices, audience engagement strategies, and content analysis. Ability to turn stories into SEO-friendly digital formats with multimedia enhancements. Support email newsletter creation and performance.
- Tech-Savvy - You're comfortable using tools like Google Docs, Monday, WordPress, and PageProof to manage editorial calendars and workflows.
- Passion for Lifestyle Content - You get excited about topics like travel, wellness, food, fashion, and culture. You're always up-to-date with trends, both in the industry and in the world at large.
Qualifications:
- Degree in journalism or related field
- 5 years of editorial experience, preferably in lifestyle or niche publishing
- Strong editing and writing skills with an eye for clarity and voice
- Experience in print magazine production and digital publishing platforms
- Exceptional project management and organizational skills, and fluency with project management platforms
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and a willingness to collaborate, problem-solve, and brainstorm
