VARSITY FOOTBALL HEAD COACH
POSITION OBJECTIVE: The head coach interacts directly with student-athletes, coaches, parents and as a representative of HCS Athletics to be a highly visible platform for the exhibition of Christian character. The employee is to live and coach in such a way so that student-athletes are led to righteousness in every area of life, and in particular their athletic development. The head coach is committed to fostering an environment of encouragement, teamwork, and excellence; not criticism, individualism, or perfectionism. QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The employee must be a Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who agrees to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both their professional conduct and personal lifestyle. The employee is committed to incorporating these qualities and standards in carrying out the calling to Christian education. In addition, demonstrate the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance and punctuality. The employee will establish and maintain excellent working relationships, representing Christ and HCS professionally and positively with the HCS community-at-large, including faculty and staff, Board members, parents, volunteers and others is crucial to the success of this role.
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Prior football coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level required, experience as a varsity head coach preferred. Previous managerial experience is a plus.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the Athletic Director to recruit and hire competent and professional assistant coaches and provide supervision to ensure athletes and coaches are growing in all areas.
- Varsity coaches shall advise and give direction to lower level squads in such areas as fundamentals, drills, patterns, offenses, defenses, conditioning, and coaching techniques.
- Commitment to executing a strength and conditioning program for the football team, providing accountability and developing buy-in.
- Monitor Heritage Christian compliance with IHSAA rules and regulations.
- Operate within the annual budget report and spending for the sport.
- Instructed student-athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success based on the Heritage Christian Athletic Handbook.
- Teach athletes to perform sound, safe fundamental techniques of the designated sport.
- Coaches will be responsible for establishing team expectations. These pre-approved expectations must be communicated to the team at the beginning of the season. These expectations would include, but not limited to; practice attendance, lateness to practice or games, or care of uniforms/equipment.
- The head coach will promote and encourage the success of all other programs, emphasizing the need to
- share multi-sport athletes and to collaborate fruitfully with students, parents, and staff to balance our students’ investment in academics.
- Provide supervision of the gym/field/etc. at all times when athletes are present. Secure facilities when done.
- Coaches should cover practice expectations in a pre-season meeting and informational letter.
- Coach will coach from a biblical perspective and strive to be a true reflection of Jesus Christ to our athletes.
- Incorporate a devotion and prayer into the program, with intentionality to lead athletes to grow in mind, spirit, and body. Set an example of the importance of prayer and Bible study.
- Coach will create a winning environment by displaying a positive attitude and providing daily encouragement to those under their leadership, helping to build strong relationship.
- Follow the Matthew 18 principle in dealing with students, parents, administration, and staff.
- Support the Administration in carrying out the mission of the school.
- Recognition that parents are primarily responsible before God for their child and partner with them.
- Encourage students to accept God’s gift of salvation and grow in their faith.
- Emphasize to students the reality of their own self-worth in Christ.
- Promote honesty, integrity, humility, loyalty, unity and encourage total character development of our athletes

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position. Must be able to traverse campus and sports fields and facilities. Must be able to use a computer and other audio-visual equipment. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to hear low-volume sounds. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Indoors, outdoors, changes in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, Exposure to the elements is to be expected while assisting with outdoor field and court preparation and oversight of Athletic events and management responsibilities. The role involves both office work and on-site presence at athletic events, training sessions, and program activities.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Saturday practices, games and meetings with primarily afternoon and evening hours
