The Electrical & Controls Engineer will serve as AMI's subject matter expert for instrumentation and controls and will have responsibilities for both supporting operations and the CPE team. This role will provide expertise to plants for troubleshooting and correcting issues with various levels of involvement and in some situations directly performing resolution in the field. Additionally, the role will work with the CPE Team to support implementation of new control systems through reviewing drawings, developing detailed electrical and controls scope of works, and creating standards and guidelines based on subject matter expertise and best practices. This role will also support and at times lead commissioning and startup of new controls systems, electrical equipment, and instrumentation.

Essential Functions

  • Support operations to resolve electrical, controls systems, & instrumentation problems both on site and remotely to achieve production goals
  • Manage communications with vendors to determine root cause, implement corrective action, and confirm issue resolution through onsite or remote testing
  • Coordinate contractors when field modifications are required for issue resolution
  • Commission VFDs and process instrumentation in the field
  • Lead development of drawings on legacy equipment as required
  • Serve as the controls engineering subject matter expert for CPE team
  • Lead the develop and review of detailed electrical and controls written scopes of work for capital projects
  • Lead the definition of functional specifications, setpoint, and alarms for control engineering firms to complete programming and configuration
  • Review external control engineers work to ensure specifications, drawings, programming, and hardware selected best aligns with scope of work
  • Support capital investments strategies by developing guidelines for implementing automation and electrical infrastructure
  • Become knowledgeable on plant processes to effectively implement controls decision
  • Collect process data and equipment information in the field, as necessary. Certain information will only be available in the field
  • Lead and support commissioning and start up on new control system installations
  • Travel to sites during capital project execution to assess electrical and controls installation and ensure adherence to project requirements
  • Ability to understand processes through reviewing an engineering drawing or the physical equipment in the process
  • Independent, innovative, and confident thinker with the ability to prioritize tasks based on multiple initiatives
  • Organized with strong diligence, capable of understanding risks and when to proceed forward without all the details
  • Must exhibit a keen sense of judgement in decision making and possess the ability to identify which decisions require alignment from various stakeholders
  • Ability to work in a less structured environment and seek information to progress work when documentation is not available
  • Leads issue resolution, anticipate potential problems, and maintains safety while driving solution to meet deadlines

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering or technical field required
  • Experience Qualifications

  • 3 years of experience with EC&I preferred
  • MCC and power distribution knowledge (NEC / NFPA 70)
  • Experience in panel checkouts
  • Experience selecting components for electrical panels
  • Experience managing electrical contractors in construction activities
  • PLC programming capability including Allen Bradley
  • Auto CAD experience
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Expertise and ability to serve as AMI's subject matter expert for EC&I
  • Experience troubleshooting instrumentation and panel wiring issues
  • Experience reading ladder logic and electrical diagrams
  • Experience with HART devices
  • Experience with multiple technologies for each type of process measurement
  • Experience programming instrumentation for level, flow, temperature, and pressure indication
  • Experience programming VFDs
  • Familiar with various engineering disciplines and capital project processes
  • Familiar with process design, reading and developing P&IDs
  • Approximately 35% travel as required to support project related activity
