Primary Purpose:

 

To plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.  To facilitate workshops for teachers in the district related to dyslexia.

 

Qualifications:

 

Trained as specialist teacher in dyslexia

Communication and conferencing skills

Peer observation, coaching, mentoring, and conferencing skills

Leadership development

Bilingual (Spanish)

 

Education/Certification:

 

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Texas Teacher Certification: Generalist EC-6, or 4-8

Master Reading Certification (preferred)

Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Experience:

 

Three years experience as a classroom teacher.

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

                                             

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Dyslexia Supports:

  1. Plan and provide appropriate support for pupils with dyslexia, in conjunction with external specialists where appropriate.
  2. Promote the district and Dyslexia Program to parents of with children with dyslexia as well as meet with parents who have concerns about their children.
  3. Keep up to date with national developments in the area of dyslexia.
  4. Advise and train teaching staff on the techniques used in the dyslexia program to ensure follow-up in the regular education classroom.
  5. As available, provide support for students struggling in reading that exhibit precursor dyslexia characteristics.
  6. During non-teaching time the dyslexia teacher is responsible for the development of research based instructional methods, aligning of materials and resources to curriculum outcomes.
  7. Administer achievement tests and evaluate test results to discover level of language skills as required.
  8. Assist with diagnostic testing for dyslexia as required.
  9. Confer regularly with other dyslexia teachers in the district and assist with issues that may arise on individual campuses.

 Curriculum:

  1. Collaborate with colleagues to review benchmark tests and construct lessons.
  2. Assist with the identifying the curriculum needs.
  3. Help other staff to understand the educational implications of various conditions and the needs of individual students and suggest ways in which they might adapt the curriculum, teaching or classroom to suit them.
  4. Listen to and advise colleagues with concerns about individual students.
  5. Confer with school counselors and teaching staff to obtain additional testing information and to gain insight on student behavior or disorders affecting the learning process.

Leadership:

  1. Serve on district-level committees.
  2. Serve as a resource to schools to develop, implement and evaluate the school’s Continuous Improvement Plan.
  3. Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.

Instructional Strategies:

 

  1. Develop and implement lesson plans and activities through distance or virtual learning to fulfill the requirements of district curriculum and show written evidence of preparation, as required. Prepare lessons in instructional formats that accommodate differences in individual student needs. 
  1. Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and resources for distance or virtual learning that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

Communication:

  1. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing to confer with district personnel, students, and/or parents between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or as set by the Principal. 
  1. Communicate with students or parents on a regular basis as directed by the Principal to ensure that weekly lessons and activity plans are effectively communicated and monitored to ensure student progress. 

 

Student Growth and Development:

  1. Provide ongoing feedback on student achievement through formal and informal methods.
  1. Be a positive role model for students and support the goals of the campus and school district.

  1. Demonstrates thoroughness, reliability and a high degree of accuracy in performing work assignments.
  2. Works cooperatively with others and maintains a positive attitude in the work environment.
  3. Demonstrates initiative and good judgment in problem solving and decision-making.

  8. Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting).
  9. Demonstrates tact, courtesy and helpfulness in dealing with staff, students, parents, and visitors in the district.
  10. Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
  11. Maintain a professional relationship with supervisors, colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  1. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  2. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills including assigned areas aligned to student needs, disabilities, IDEA, state special education and district guidelines.
  3. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  4. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  5. Maintain confidentiality.                   

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent district-wide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
