Description

The Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work in the operation of heavy public works or utilities automotive equipment. The incumbent is responsible for the repair or constructing solutions for any flooding or drainage issues.

The starting pay for this position is $21.93 hourly plus benefit and retirement options.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates one or more of the following most of the work day on an assigned basis : backhoe, excavators, front end loader, dump trucks, tractor with boom mower, and / or water truck.
  • Occasionally operates gasoline or other powered machinery such as cement mixers, air hammers, compressors, pumping machinery, and saws.
  • Washes, cleans, and gives routine first level maintenance to the equipment.
  • Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned : patching, shoulder repair, ditch cleaning, tree trimming, bridge repair, headwall construction, and other duties.
  • May function as crew leader.
  • May be assigned to operate other specialized equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis.
  • Performs on-call duties on a 24 hour per day basis for emergency response.
  • Regular attendance with the ability to work a five (5) day, forty (40) hour flex time work week.

Emergency Response

County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED).
  • Three (3) years of experience in medium / heavy equipment operation and on the road driving.
  • Licenses, Certifications or Registrations

  • Must possess valid Florida Commercial Driver's License Class "B" or "A" (depending on equipment) with a good driving record and be insurable by current insurance carrier
  • May be required to have tankers or hazardous materials endorsement.
  • Ability to obtain ATSSA Flagger Certification and Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certification.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, certification in NIMS / Incident Command Courses IS100PWb, IS200, and IS700.
  • This position is subject to DOT random drug and / or alcohol testing.
  • Required Competencies

  • Knowledge of principles and methods of operating construction type equipment.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods and materials used in public works construction and maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to safety and operation of equipment.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, and detect problems with equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual work.
  • Ability to use or repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment, or water plants.
  • Ability to follow and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in cleaning and maintaining equipment.
  • Skill in operating medium to heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the use of and power tools.

  • Physical Abilities

  • Skills : acceptable eyesight (with or without correction), walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, handling, lifting, repetitive motion, speaking, visual acuity, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, eye hand and foot coordination, and equipment operation.
  • The work is heavy work : Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Environmental Conditions

    Works in an outdoor environment at work site. Works in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to incumbent's co-workers or others.
