Struggling in a world of mediocre education?
If you believe there is an epidemic of mediocrity and apathy that plagues young people in traditional school, come and help us build a 21st century solution where young people have real responsibility, can hone their ability to make good choices, and are inspired to pursue their own gifts and purpose in life.
In a nutshell, Heroes Academy is the most innovative Pre-K through 12th Grade School in the Treasure Valley. We're reinventing education, and seeking an equally passionate person to be part of it.
Position Description: A Guide/Mentor at Heroes Academy is not a traditional teacher. Rather than seeking to control young people, a guide helps shepherd a community of learners to be able to govern themselves.
This position is to mentor our elementary-aged learners.
Specifically, a guide might be doing any of the following:
- Launch the day with a Socratic Discussion: Challenge young people by putting them in the shoes of someone who has to make a critical decision (like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta), or open a discussion about a real challenge in the studio (classroom), or inspire young people with the story of someone who did something remarkable.
- Facilitate quest-like projects: Invite learners to take on a big, real world challenges. Like creating a stop motion film to be played at a local theatre, solve a "crime" in the studio, or sell a product to a customer at a children's business fair.
- Equip learners with tools: Share tools and strategies you or others have used to become more productive, solve a problem, or make a breakthrough.
- Setup the studio environment and learning challenges so learners can make progress at their own pace, without needing the help of an adult.
- Encourage and equip learners to track their progress and create portfolios to show parents, peers and apprenticeship employers what they can do.
- Shepherd the energy of the studio by helping young people make and keep promises they make to each other and hold each other accountable.
Qualifications:
- A deep curiosity about life and love of lifelong learning
- Innovative and entrepreneurial spirit
- A love for America, commitment to free market ideals, and a deep belief in economic, political, and religious freedom.
- Montessori, project-based and/or experiential learning training is helpful but not required
- A grow mindset is preferred
This is a position for an independent learner who can work with little direct guidance; someone who likes to collaborate, experiment, evaluate and continually improve; someone who has a deep respect for all children believing that each human has genius within; and someone who is a flexible problem-solver. It is essential that this person can learn fast, loves to work hard, and is an active reader and writer.
