Your Opportunity

Are you interested in applying your skills in botany, restoration, wetland science, or wildlife management in cooperation with a team of enthusiastic and committed scientists, engineers, and planners to improve transportation, stormwater, and mind reclamation projects throughout Montana and the Pacific Northwest? Do you enjoy teaching others, learning from some of the most cutting-edge science and engineering projects in the Rockies, and co-creating meaningful and impactful projects? Are you looking for part-time work (between 24 - 32 hours per week) with flexible hours and a hybrid workplace? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you! 

In this role, we will count on you to:

  • Support our Restoration Practice throughout the Rockies and Pacific Northwest
  • Support cross-discipline work with our team in Missoula, Montana
  • Lead a variety of environmental studies for public and private development and infrastructure projects such as stream surveys, wetland delineations, plant surveys, wildlife habitat assessments, and restoration projects
  • Perform biological assessments and evaluations in support of Endangered Species Act (ESA) compliance for a variety of fish and wildlife species 
  • Play in integral role in ongoing refinement and implementation of our strategic business development initiatives in Montana
  • Manage and mentor junior team members so they can thrive at Herrera and within the industry 
Other duties you will be responsible for:
  • Periodic travel to project sites throughout the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere in the western U.S.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Experience, & Licensure/Certifications

  • 8 years of relevant professional experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field
  • Project management experience
  • Successful permit acquisition or management experience for projects affecting wetlands and streams in Montana 
  • If you are a wetland scientist, a Professional Wetland Scientist certification

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Field data collection expertise in wetlands, floodplains, streams, and riparian areas 
  • Expertise in Montana identification of native and invasive vegetation and wildlife
  • Collaborator and team builder with capacity to work with a team of interdisciplinary professionals and manage multidisciplinary projects
  • Experience developing scopes of work and budgets 
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Ability to drive vehicles on a variety of road surfaces and navigate by foot over rough terrain

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 10 years of relevant experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with Federal Highway Administration and Montana Department of Transportation environmental procedures 
  • Experience conducting NEPA assessments

  • This position is salaried and exempt from overtime, and prorated based on number of hours per week; the annual salary ranges for 40 hours per week are:
    • Level IV: $92,000 - $128,000
    • Level V: $110,400 - $147,200
