Job Details: Position Title: Assistant Director
Position Type : Full time
The successful applicant will possess excellent communication and customer service skills. Responsibilities include: answering reference questions, and cataloging and collection development. Position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, and requires periodic participation and attendance at library events and meetings.
Duties of Position:
- Advises personnel on day-to-day issues and questions, assesses and provides for training needs, initiates employee recognition, promotion, disciplinary action, and discharge processes as necessary and appropriate.
- Is a forward-thinking and inspirational leader to the library team; is a positive cultural example and regularly supports the team in their various tasks and assignments throughout the library.
- Assists Director with tasks related to bookkeeping, billing and office duties.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with and work with patrons and staff in a personable and professional manner.
- Answers reference questions and locates library materials for patrons.
- Arranges interlibrary loans and reserves.
- Ability to work effectively with current and emerging technologies.
- Understanding of patron confidentiality requirements and ethics responsibilities under Illinois law.
- Alerts supervisor to problems encountered in work routines.
- Oversees the library in the absence of the Library Director.
- Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings,
conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions.
- Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested.
- Knowledge of Polaris cataloging or ability to be trained to catalog.
- Progressive experience with computer technology.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, social media, cataloging, integrated library systems, Polaris and OCLC
- Light book keeping and office skills.
- Provide access to Library materials and equipment, serve as initial contact point for Library patrons.
- Assist patrons in locating materials.
- Solve patron problems and issues based on thorough understanding of Library policies.
- Place holds for requests for items from other Libraries.
Experience and Education:
REQUIRED: EXPERIENCE: Two years of customer service and management experience. Proficiency in written and spoken English.
PREFERRED: EXPERIENCE: Three years of relevant library and supervisory experience.
EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree in Library Science or related field: Business, Accounting, Bookkeeping or similar.
Equipment & Working Conditions:
Photocopiers; library computer system and all of its related equipment and functions; multiple software programs; and technology.
Busy public service area; must have excellent people skills; must be flexible and willing to adjust to last minute situations. Must be able to stand for extended period of time. Must be able to reach shelf height of 6 feet. Must be able to work at counter height. Must be able to spend extended periods of time at a computer keyboard and monitor.
Salary Range: The starting salary will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. A benefits package is included. Salary is competitive and negotiable based on qualifications. This position is covered by the Illinois Municipal Employee’s Retirement Fund (IMRF). Vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays are also included and are commensurate with those of other city employees.
