REPORTS TO: Principal, Special Education Director
Job Overview: We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Exceptional Education Teacher to join our team in supporting students with disabilities in grades 3-5. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to helping students reach their full potential by providing individualized instruction, fostering a positive learning environment, and ensuring compliance with North Carolina’s state standards for exceptional children.
The Exceptional Education Teacher will work collaboratively with general education teachers, parents, and school leadership to design and implement appropriate instructional strategies, accommodations, and interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional Support:
- Provide specialized instruction to students with disabilities in individual or small group settings.
- Adapt and modify the curriculum to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) based on the North Carolina Standards and the specific needs of students.
- Monitor and assess student progress using state-approved assessment tools and strategies.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with general education teachers to ensure effective inclusion of students in the general education classroom.
- Collaborate with other special education staff, related service providers, and administrators to develop and modify instructional plans.
- Maintain regular communication with parents regarding student progress, concerns, and educational needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings and assist in the development, review, and revision of IEPs.
Behavioral Support:
- Implement strategies and interventions to address behavioral concerns, fostering a safe and inclusive classroom environment.
- Use positive behavior support techniques in alignment with North Carolina's behavioral expectations for students with exceptionalities.
Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure all activities and documentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including North Carolina’s Exceptional Children Program and IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).
- Complete accurate and timely paperwork related to student assessments, progress reports, and IEP updates.
Professional Development:
- Stay current with best practices in special education and adaptive teaching methods.
- Participate in district-sponsored and state-required professional development opportunities.
- Engage in reflective practice and continually seek out ways to improve teaching effectiveness.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Certification: Valid North Carolina Teaching License in Special Education (General Curriculum or Adapted Curriculum for K-6 or K-12, depending on certification area).
- Experience: Previous experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in elementary school settings.
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) and how to adapt it for students with exceptionalities.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and implement individualized interventions.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with educational technology and data management systems.
- Knowledge of behavioral management strategies and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Experience with assistive technology tools and resources.
- Certification or training in specific methodologies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Orton-Gillingham, or other specialized techniques for teaching students with disabilities.
Physical Requirements: Ability to work with students in a classroom setting, including light physical activity such as lifting, assisting with mobility, and supporting students with varying needs.
