POSITION SUMMARY
Community and Landowner relations are an important part of this role. The Surface Land Team and its members serve as the face of the company in many parts of the Hess value chain. We are seeking well-qualified professionals who possess the skills necessary to cultivate, manage and maintain long-term relationships with our landowners while delivering on company objectives to support our operations.
The primary customers for this role are our Houston-based asset teams, Bakken field operations and the construction and implementation project teams based in North Dakota.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Draft, negotiate, analyze, and ensure accuracy of all land-related contracts and grants pertaining to surface use, including surface usage agreements, rights-of-way easements, road use agreements, land purchases etc.- Play an active role in the team that determines preliminary pipeline routes.
- Manage all surface-related land functions in support of a multi-rig drilling program.
- Negotiate acquisition of rights-of-way easements, access points, temporary workspace agreements and surface use agreements.
- Direct, oversee and manage field brokers utilized in support of surface acquisition programs.
- Provide Land support to Field operations and Area Work Leads
- Coordinate communication between surface owners and field personnel in order to avoid, address and/or resolve issues related to ongoing drilling, daily production, maintenance obligations, and construction activities.
- Coordinate all surface-related land activities with Houston-based land negotiators.
- Maintain an active presence in industry associations such as AAPL or IRWA.
- Ensure project deadlines are met, adhere to land budget, and regularly communicate progress and issues to project owners.
- Manage the process of delivering completed “handoff package” to construction or facilities teams that outline surface rights, restrictions, stipulations related to the rights obtained.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Training
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Juris Doctorate (JD) or Petroleum Land Management (PLM) is preferred
- 3 years of related surface experience required
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to manage all surface related land activities associated with ongoing drilling and infrastructure programs in multiple project areas.
- Midstream oil and gas experience
- Working knowledge and understanding of the spacing rules and regulations of the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC) and local planning & zoning regulations.
- Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail in a fast-paced work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working closely with team members, industry partners and external stakeholders.
- Strong negotiating skills, capability to perform all job duties with minimal supervision, and self-motivated to deliver high-quality and on-time work.
- Skilled in interpreting and drafting land-related contracts and grants pertaining to surface use, including surface usage agreements, rights-of-way, road use, etc.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with a “team player” attitude.
