This position will be vacant starting February 14, 2025.
Hettinger County Sheriff’s Office in southwest North Dakota is accepting applications for the full-time position of patrol deputy. Our deputies get to know the community and enjoy good relationships with them.
Hettinger County is a close-knit, largely farming community with a relatively low population and low call volume. This allows us to spend more time providing quality services and personal follow-ups to our residents. At full staff, we have seven sworn employee. Deputies are given a great deal of freedom in deciding how to spend their shifts.
The community offers good schools, affordable housing/low cost of living, and family-friendly recreation opportunities. Southwest North Dakota is well known for its excellent pheasant hunting and nearby lakes with great fishing. We are only a short drive from Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the South Dakota Badlands.

Specific Available Benefits
- Deputies are enrolled in the North Dakota Public Employee Retirement System (ND PERS) Public Safety Retirement Plan. Fully vested after three years' full-time employment. 100% of contributions are employer-paid. The total employer-paid contributions will be equal to 18.04% of the employee’s gross pay (per pay period)

- Flex plan – these dollars can instead be used to cover other insurance costs, if desired

- Deputies may live outside Hettinger County, but must fulfill some paid on-call requirements
- Free on-site housing and sleeping quarters will be available for on-call deputies by February 2025
- HCSO will provide $500.00 toward moving expenses
- Deputies are salaried (monthly pay period) and are overtime-eligible
Shifts/On-Call
- 10-hour shifts; 2 days on/2 off/5 on/5 off rotation, allowing every other weekend off
- Deputies are required to take some on-call shifts, at approximately 5 hours per on-call shift
- On-call pay is $3 per hour

- All duty gear and uniforms, sans boots
- All duty weapons (may carry your own pistol and rifle, pending approval by the Sheriff and firearms instructor)

Duties/Required Functions
- Patrol, conduct basic investigations, serve civil process paperwork, occasional inmate transports, and occasional courtroom duties
- Report writing and organizational skills
- Ability to understand and appropriately apply state law and municipal ordinances within the framework of the United States Constitution
- Effective and respectful verbal communication
- Firearm proficiency and understanding of safe handling
- Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned
- Ability to function in stressful environments, potentially without backup
- Ability to provide truthful testimony in all communication, including courtroom testimony
- Basic proficiency in the use of computer hardware/software, smartphones, body worn video/audio recording devices, police vehicle equipment, etc.
- Specialized training for specific skills will be provided in the police academy and/or during the field training and evaluation program
Minimum Qualifications
- No previous law enforcement experience required
- High school diploma or GED, but college experience is preferred
- Must be licensed or licensable as a Peace Office in North Dakota within one year of hire date
- Must have no felony, domestic assault, or any other criminal convictions barring the possession of a firearm
- Other criminal convictions will be considered by North Dakota POST on a case-by-case basis, giving consideration to the nature of the offense, when the conviction occurred, and the circumstances under which the offense occurred
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Must be a United States citizen
