Position Summary: The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for managing billing tasks directly related to patient care. These situations could involve provider charges, processing over-the-counter patient payments and maintaining follow-up on delinquent patient accounts. Often, the Medical Billing Specialist will have to work collaboratively with the Practice Director and Clinical Coordinators, as well as the other billing specialists on the team. With our practice focusing heavily on HCC codes and quality care initiatives, a general knowledge and understanding of accepted insurances and codes is required. Additionally, Medical Billing Specialists will be required to communicate with patients to discuss billing issues, reconcile accounts, etc.
Duties:
- Maintain open communications with the Corporate Billing Office and divisional personnel.
- Work with your inter-departmental staff and practice staff collaboratively and effectively as a team.
- Post daily charges into the Practice Management System within two days from date of service.
- Assist in the research of proper coding techniques to maximize reimbursement.
- Assist staff with coding and reimbursement problems, as needed.
- Review superbills and/or EMR for accuracy before data entry.
- Code procedures and diagnoses accurately within the practice management system
- Verify any vague information for accuracy with provider of service or another staff member, if applicable.
- Post over-the-phone patient payments.
- Approve claims for billing
- Reconcile the Practice Daily Balance daily.
- Review Un-posted Ticket Report daily.
- Review Rejection Reports (including lab rejections) daily.
- Investigate billing rejections and provide appropriate and timely follow-up to the staff and patients, as necessary.
- Update insurance registration and demographic information on patient accounts within one day from date of service.
- Provide and explain account/billing information to patients, when necessary.
- Keep abreast of current changes in coding requirements from Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payers.
- Assist with giving fee estimates to patients, when necessary.
- Resubmit medical insurance claims, when necessary and report any delays immediately to Practice Director.
- Investigate billing problems and provide appropriate follow-up as needed.
- Perform adjusting entries on patient accounts, when necessary.
- Complete all end-of-day reports and procedures.
- Open batch daily with 100 or 103 in front of you name (depending on what office you are posting for).
- Complete daily or weekly reviews of your desktop for incomplete notes or messages.
- Always maintain professionalism in your interactions with patients and staff.
- Observe policies and procedures related to confidentiality, medical records, release of information and HIPAA.
- Attend scheduled Billing Meetings.
- Perform and complete additional tasks and projects directly or indirectly related to your position when assigned by the Practice Director or Genesis Central Billing Management.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Proficiency in medical billing systems and software
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, coding, and billing procedures
- Familiarity with ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding systems
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge of medical collection practices is a plus
