The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Benefit Programs Trainer to join our Training Unit. The successful candidate will have a passion for educating and empowering staff to best service public assistance programs by delivering high-quality and engaging training sessions to the Benefit Programs staff.

What You Do and How You Do it:

  • Develop and implement instructor-led training sessions on topics such as SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, Energy Assistance, LTSS and other relevant benefit programs.
  • Create and maintain engaging training materials, including presentations, manuals, Standard Operating Procedures, desk aids and online resources.
  • Facilitate interactive learning environments that promote active participation and knowledge retention for adult learners.
  • Stay abreast of current best practices, policy changes, and program updates at the local, state, and federal levels. This includes remaining abreast of Virginia Department of Social Services training calendars and ability to synthesize and communicate Fusion broadcasts updates relevant to Benefit programs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs through assessments, performance metrics and participant feedback and adjust content as needed.
  • Provide ongoing support to Benefit Programs staff in understanding and applying program guidelines.
  • Monitor cases of trainees for correct application of policy and use results to develop individualized training programs.
  • Work closely with program managers, supervisors, and other team members to address training needs, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Foster a collaborative learning environment that promotes engagement and skills development for all learners.
  • At times, you may be required to determine eligibility for public assistance programs and will learn local, state and federal regulations, and stay up-to-date as things change
  • Perform other duties as required

Here's What You Need:

High school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience in benefit programs or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.

Bachelor's degree in social work, sociology, psychology, education, or closely related field; supplemented with work experience and/or training that includes social work, training/teaching, curricula development, supervision, and personal computer operations preferred.

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in Social Services, with a strong understanding of public assistance programs preferred.

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in professional training or instruction preferred.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, CPS registry check and education/degree verification required.

Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.

We’re Looking for Ideal Candidates Who Have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of public assistance programs to include TANF, VIEW, SNAP, Childcare, Energy Assistance, LTSS and Medicaid program guidelines and policy interpretation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of adult training methodologies and learning theories.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate complex information both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in computer software, including word processing, database applications, and some statistical analysis.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into easily understandable language for various audiences in a clear, concise, and engaging manner.
  • Ability to identify and address challenges effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to engage adult learners with various learning styles.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Proficient in using learning management systems (LMS) and other training tools.

Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This position is required to serve on an emergency shelter team during times of natural disaster.
