Overview

ICU nurses assess, plan, implement and evaluate care services for patients with a broad range of health conditions. They need to be skilled in the assessment of patients and capable of using high tech equipment. ICU nurses must possess the physical, mental and emotional stamina to work with seriously ill patients and their loved ones.
Some of the specialty skills performed:
- Care of patients on ventilators
- Calculate medication dosages and titrate potent medications.
- Hemodynamic monitoring
- External pacing
- 12 lead EKG interpretation
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- Care of patients with arterial lines
- Removal of venous sheaths (South)
- Monitoring life support equipment
Provides care to balloon pump patient (South)
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
High School Graduate or Equivalent
Graduate of an accredited nursing program
Minimum of one year RN experience preferred
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Licensure by the Alabama State Board of Nursing
- After orientation demonstrates and maintains skills and knowledge pertinent to the practice and
education of a Registered Nurse.
- After orientation demonstrates competence of the care of the intensive care patient
- Successful completion of an ACLS and PALS course within one year of hire
