MEDICAL ASSISTANT TRAINING PROGRAM

Nurse Aide – Entry Level or Full Performance

To support the expansion of services within East Hawaii Health Clinics, the East Hawaii Region has created a Medical Assistant Training Program. Training program participants will be hired as Nurse Aides as they receive paid and benefited on the job training that will allow them to obtain their certification as a Medical Assistant this summer. Once participants earn their certification, they may be eligible to work as Medical Assistants.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify, you must meet all the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences are credited based on a 40-hour work week.

Knowledge of: Personal hygiene and bodily care.

Ability to: Read, write, speak and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely; get along well with others; acquire and demonstrate an attitude of respect toward patients with a variety of disabilities; retain emotional stability despite emotional and physical pressures; develop an appreciation of nursing and medical ethics.

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR FULL PERFORMANCE: In addition to the entry level qualifications, one (1) year of work experience in a health facility such as a hospital or similar medically oriented institution where the primary or basic objective was to observe and report on a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implement care and/or treatment procedures for a caseload of patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of basic nursing skills (i.e., taking vital signs, measuring output, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.); first aid; patient rights; universal precautions; infection control; body mechanics; principles of growth and development; purpose and benefits of activities of daily living (i.e., eating/feeding, providing fluids, bathing, dressing, etc.); purpose and benefits of restorative care (i.e., use and application of assistive devices, range of motion activities, etc.); basic medical and nursing terminology; and the ability to assist and participate in the activities of the treatment team; assess each patient’s age specific needs; and independently provide age specific direct personal care services to a caseload of patients.

Certification Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. The East Hawaii Region offers BLS Healthcare Provider certification classes in-house for eligible employees.

• Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
