General Description
The Judge Mario E. Ramirez, Jr. Juvenile Justice Center Mental Health Coordinator position coordinates and supervises both the clinical and the administrative functions of the psychological and social services unit, including delivery of direct mental health services to juveniles housed in the detention center during the course of their stay. These services should address juveniles' needs in order to promote their mental and physical well-being, as well as their safety and security while in custody. This position also includes the supervision and oversight of the staff assigned to the unit. The Judge Mario E. Ramirez, Jr. Juvenile Center Mental Health Coordinator directly reports to the Juvenile Justice Center's Chief JPO, or his / her designee.
Examples of Work Performed
Provides clinical and administrative supervision to staff and practicum students
Designs and implements effective programs within the juvenile detention center to effectively meet the clinical needs of the youth
Supervises daily assignments and triaging of all incoming referrals including monitoring assessments to ensure timely completion
Monitors clinical notes to assure their quality, completion, and timeliness
Supervises the maintenance of juvenile records
Manages staff schedules to include holiday coverage, time sheets, staff meetings, vacation, training, sick, and comp-time issues
Assists in resolving staff conflicts constructively and fairly
Creates and maintains effective relationships with local universities and colleges to obtain and maintain a strong practicum program
Provides clinical assessments and crisis interventions to juveniles in the detention, as needed
Provides training to staff on mental health issues
Ensures and facilitates the training of division staff
Audits casework / counseling performance of division staff
May require some evenings
Keeps the chief juvenile probation officer informed of any special, serious, unusual, or potentially hazardous incidents pertaining to the safety and security of the facility, probationers, detention youth, and / or staff
Education and Experience
Master's degree in Social, Behavioral Sciences, or a directly related field
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas
Three (3) years of post-degree experience providing direct counseling services, trauma informed, and knowledge in crisis resolution
Experience working with juvenile justice system and related social agencies
Experience with training in substance abuse
Experience with Cognitive Behavior Training (CBT) and behavior modification preferred
Certificates, Licenses and Registration
Must complete and pass a background investigation to meet Juvenile Probation Officer certification / recertification standards of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license
Must be able to be insured by the County's insurance carrier
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be knowledgeable of the Hidalgo County / TJJD policies and procedures, computer systems, and court procedures
Must have extensive knowledge of and adherence to ethical boundaries
Must be knowledgeable of diagnostic criteria, clinical / psychosocial assessments, effective short-term therapeutic interventions, multi-axial diagnosis, specific clinical features and guidelines for formulating diagnosis and treatment plans
Bilingual preferred
Must be knowledgeable in the following areas :
Clinical practice in a correctional facility with juvenile population, cultural issues as they relate to treatment, current ethical and legal issues
Must be knowledgeable in theoretical and intervention approaches including cognitive and supportive modalities focusing on redirection or eliminating stress-induced crises situations
Ability to provide administrative supervision, clinical supervision and training to a multidisciplinary clinical and administrative staff
Must be able to work with other professionals at all levels of the juvenile justice system including judges, attorneys, psychiatrist, psychologist, administrators, and probation and detention officers
Be able to develop and maintain positive working relationship with others
